Eric provided a great tour in an extremely limited amount of time! Due to the cruise ship schedule and the need to take a golf cart style buggy from the ship to the port gate ( and back, competing with other passengers), we were constrained to 3 .5 hours of touring time. Eric delivered an exceptional tour. We told him our focus was on Marble Mountain, roughly 30 minutes drive each way from the port. Eric designed a tour that hit all the highlights that one could reasonably expect to see for a first time visitor. He sent us a text the night before telling us that he would be at the port entrance with a sign 30 minutes before the planned meeting time. He was ready when we got to the entrance 5 minutes earlier. He provided a nice, clean, comfortable Toyota SUV with a driver as part of the tour price. The driver allowed Eric to focus on giving us the tour, dropping us off at the entrance to every site, without Eric having to worry about a parking place. The driver diverted traffic and opened the door every time I entered or exited that side of the vehicle, while Eric did the same for my wife on the passenger side. The tour was excellent. When we stopped at the dragon bridge, Eric let us take a few pictures up close then walked us further so he could take our picture with the entire bridge in the background. As we drove along the beachfront, Eric told us stories about the monkeys stealing the fruit offerings from the temples, requiring the temples to switch to plastic replicas of the fruit. At the 67 meter high female Buddha statue, Eric took us through the tranquil garden behind the statue first, a spot many people miss. He explained the meaning behind the number 7, showing us the lotus petals depicting the Buddha's first steps. He talked about how his family assisted at the temple 2x per month. He showed us the 7 windows in the statue's back, talked about the progression from the gray to brown to golden robes signifying the monk's rank. He explained the symbolism and benefits of walking through one of the three arches in the gate - intelligence, balance, long life. From there, we went to Marble Mountain. While we stood in the queue for the lift to the top, Eric brought lift tickets up (and then down). He talked about the 5 elements represented by the mountains (water, wood, fire, metal, earth). We were unable to go into the cave because electrical power for lighting was not working. He explained the concept of reincarnation . We ended the touring portion at the one of the marble carving houses where we bought two small souvenirs. Eric talked about the rift in his family that still exists today caused by his aunts working for the US during the war while his father fought against the US. We wish healing for his family from this tragic war. Eric invited us to celebrate that night with his family the anniversary of his grandfather's passing by eating chicken feet he was cooking. Unfortunately, we had to leave...
