Hello, I'm Gary and I guide tours--by land and sea--in my hometown of Sitka, Alaska. I'm a born and raised Sitkan and proud of it. I feel really lucky that I get to show Sitka off to visitors from all over the world. Sitka is one of the most epic places on the planet. It's wild and pristine and so very scenic. We have mountains and ocean and lots of wildlife. My family's been here for 4 generations so my roots go deep on this island. I've spent my entire life exploring our waters and honing my inner "wildlife radar" so if you'd like to see whales and sea otters and sea lions and all the wondrous creatures that live here too, I'm the guide for you. I've been guiding visitors to Sitka since 1994. Like many of us who grew up here, I started out working on commercial fishing boats. My first experiences out on our waters were actually with my Grandma Susie, who was quite the pioneering Alaskan fisherwoman. I then went on to guide fishing charters until I found my real passion: Whale watching and eco-tours. I love the natural world and marveling at its creatures and getting to share that with other people just makes the experience that much more epic. You could say my life motto is "livin' the dream, sharing the adventure. " In 2016 I had the opportunity to purchase my own boat, the M/V Blue Dawg, and venture out on my own. Being the 'captain of my own ship' has allowed me to create the customized tour experience for my guests that I can truly get excited about. Exploring together, sharing an adventure and giving you an authentic experience of Sitka is what I'm all about. Boat Captain & Guide US Coast Guard Licensed 100 Ton Master No Restrictions

Explore the pristine and lively waters of Sitka Sound and the rugged, ancient coastlines of Baranof, Kruzof and the many islands surrounding Sitka aboard our 37 ft cabin cruiser, the ideal vessel for adventuring in Southeast Alaska. Here you'll be immersed in a truly wild place, where you can experience Mother Nature in all her raw glory and observe animals up close and personal thriving in their natural habitats. On a typical summer day in Sitka Sound, we could see Humpback, Gray, Killer, and Minke whales, Sea Otters, Steller Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Sitka Black Tail Deer, Coastal Brown Bear and of course, our ever-popular Bald Eagles. Coming to the Last Frontier is an adventure in and of itself—Sitka is located on the western edge of Baranof Island, one of the thousands of islands in the Alexander Archipelago within the Gulf of Alaska—but once here venturing off the island into our many waterways, inlets and bays is the best way to make it an epic and truly memorable adventure.
The Sitka Whale Watching Marine Tour is a 2. 5-hour wildlife tour around Sitka Sound exploring its many islets and inlets all while surrounded by the majestic mountains and waters of Baranof Island and its many wildlife inhabitants. We'll go where they go so they--and the weather--will determine our itinerary on any given day. Weather permitting, we can make our way out to St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge, a volcanic island home to 32 species of migratory seabirds including Puffins. We'll also zip around the volcanic coastline of neighboring Kruzof Island, getting a glimpse of it's isolated and wild black sand beaches, many kelp forests and the majestic Mt. Edgecumbe volcano. The tour will begin and end at our home marina, Crescent Harbor in downtown Sitka so you can easily explore the downtown area before or after your tour. If you're on a cruise ship, from here you can catch one of the complimentary buses back to Old Sitka Dock where your ship will be docked.

We'll be adventuring aboard the M/V Blue Dawg, my 30' cabin-cruiser. It's the ideal vessel for exploring Southeast Alaskan waters with a heated cabin, big windows ideal for sightseeing and wildlife viewing and aft and bow decks that are great for photography and taking in the epic surroundings.
