Explore Sitka your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Sitka tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Sitka for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Visit the Alaska Raptor Center to see rehabilitated eagles up close, then ride out to Fortress of the Bear to learn about rescued bears and their care. On the water, a small-boat tour in Sitka Sound often finds humpbacks, sea otters, and harbour seals.

History tours: Explore the Russian Bishop’s House and St. Michael’s Cathedral, then climb Castle Hill for the flag transfer site and views. Walk the totem-lined trails at Sitka National Historical Park while your guide shares Tlingit history at the 1804 battlefield.

Museums tours: Dive into Alaska Native art and tools at the Sheldon Jackson Museum, then browse local stories at the Sitka History Museum. Your guide can pace the visit and help arrange talks with staff when available.

Getting around: Downtown is compact and easy to walk, but public transit is limited and some sites sit a few kilometres from the centre. For those, ask your local guide about private transportation or book a chauffeured tour.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Sitka inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Sitka

From Sitka, plan day trips to wild islands, hot springs, and seabird rookeries that sit close enough for a full day, and match them with wildlife boat tours so your tour fits the tides and the weather.

- Kruzof Island and Mount Edgecumbe, a classic volcano hike with coastal views and black sand in places, gives you a steady trail through spruce forest to a broad summit that rewards hikers, photographers, and anyone who likes a long walk with sea air.

- St. Lazaria Island, a protected seabird haven just off Sitka Sound, lets you cruise past cliffs, sea caves, puffins, and murres, so birdwatchers and nature fans get close-up viewing from the water while keeping wildlife friendly distances.

- Goddard Hot Springs, a simple shore-side soak reached by boat, pairs steaming tubs with a quiet cove and views of the Sound, which suits you if a relaxed day in nature sounds better than a big hike.

- Baranof Warm Springs, farther out on Baranof Island, mixes a short boardwalk stroll, waterfall views, and hot pools above the creek, a longer day that fits travellers who want a remote feel without technical trekking.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Sitka most travellers miss.
