My story - over 10 years ago I worked in construction. I hated it. I worked too many hours and was missing out on seeing my kids growing up. I was just never around. Then one day I fell from a roof and smashed my legs. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. After a couple of years I was out of the wheelchair and looking for work but no one would hire me. Frustrated, I said to my wife that I would sit on a checkout at the local supermarket if I had to. Exactly one week later a job came up at the local supermarket to sit at the checkout. I sat there for over a year just to prove to future employers that I could hold down a job. It was insanely easy with terrible pay but I was just putting my time in so I decided that I may as well have a laugh whilst I'm doing it. I had fun every day even though I was the ugliest checkout lady in the store, by a country mile. Eventually I began to receive excellent customer service reviews which I used to help me get a job selling tickets at Stirling Castle. (I really liked the funky tartan trousers they wore to work. ) I began to just soak up the history and stories of this magnificent place. I would natter away to customers about where to look for some really cool stories and stuff to see. I laughed a lot and had loads of fun every day. I was regularly given extra encouragement from the management to speed up my transaction time. It seems that I was telling too many stories! For all of the magnificence of the castle, the restorations, the preservation, the history, its' excellent presentation, the guides and the costumed guides; a helpful cashier called Andrew began to receive first class reviews on trip advisor. Not long after, the castle management asked me if I would like to be trained up as a guide. I jumped at the chance. I absolutely loved being a guide at Stirling Castle and injected heavy doses of fun and laughter into what was sometimes very serious and uncomfortable medieval history. Then the first class reviews starting rolling in from visitors who had either been on one of my guided tours or folk that I had told stories to or helped in some way personally. It was a joy. I loved every minute. I heard of a job with a company that needed a freelance driver/guide for all of Scotland. My first class reviews helped me to secure that position and now all of Scotland would become my playground. It also solved a rather large problem that had been plaguing me. I could now create the quality time that I needed to be a present father to my children in mind as well as body. Before long I had my own vehicle and the necessary insurances to begin creating and offering my own private tours. I recognise that all of my clients are on holiday and want a good time whilst exploring Scotland's history, food, music, shops, mountains, glens and lochs. I even know where the best toilets are! (More importantly, I know where the worst ones are). The really cool stuff in Scotland is just off the beaten path and I specialise in finding these extraordinary places. If I am not having a good time with you then I am not doing it right. I've always felt a great deal of responsibility towards my clients in ensuring that they have a world class experience in my country on what might be their trip of a lifetime to a destination that they have long had on their bucket list. I'll show up when I say I'll show up and we'll explore Scotland with sincerity, kindness, honesty, curiosity and laughter. I love my job. It's almost as if somebody up there loved me enough to shove me off that roof! Guide since 2016. None

Overview of your Stirling tour

Medieval Scotland was a strange place and Stirling Castle provides a splendid backdrop within which to describe the attitudes and practices of Scotland's royal family some 500 years ago. A golden castle sits atop a hill guarding the gateway to the Highlands below. I trained as a guide at this castle and every inch has a story to tell so allow me to take you on a private tour of this place before we head north across the Highland boundary line to discover a few hidden gems in a couple of remote Highland glens. Learn how the Highland Clans survived and discover where their souls go after they die. Expect to be driven off the tarmac and onto a disused railway line to gain access to a private estate where I am the only tour guide in Scotland with permission to drive there! If you like stories, this could be the tour for you.

I would give Andrew 10 stars if I could, and so would my three other travel-mates. (We are 4 senior citizens.) Having once worked at Stirling Castle, he had a depth of knowledge to impart, and all kinds of anecdotes to share with us. Driving in his car in the city traffic or on country roads, we always felt perfectly safe. Besides educating us he also entertained us with folklore legends and his wonderful sense of humor. This all-day tour with Andrew was in addition to his "Taste of Scotland" tour which we had done a previous day. Those two tours with Andrew were a highlight of our trip to Scotland. If you have the opportunity to enjoy a tour with Andrew, you will be one happy traveler. And oh, yes! He knew we like single malt Scotch, so he arranged a tasting for us. So, in closing hurry up and arrange your tour with Andrew before he gets booked up!

Great trip and appreciated the flexibility. Andrew was a great, knowledgeable and witty guide for our journey. Always nice to have the experiences tailored to our interests. A nice blend of tourist “must dos” with local stops and food. A great day out of the city!

Andrew was an excellent guide! He actually had to step in for us at the last minute due to car troubles with our original guide. Without missing a beat, he stepped in and gave us a superb tour. Extremely knowledgeable and funny, we enjoyed spending time with him. He also provided us with an extra special and fun surprise at the end of our tour. Highly recommend!!

From the moment you meet Andrew you know you are in good hands. His first words to me were “I am your man, and this is your car”. We set off on our adventure. I expressed interest in the ancient peoples of Scotland and he asked a few questions and recalculated the days plan to incorporate my interests. Of course, Stirling Castle was a must see. His personal knowledge of the site was immense and you feel at home while visiting. The grounds and views are absolutely spectacular and do not disappoint. I am also thankful to him for the opportunity to see true Scotland countryside and the wonderful conversation had along the way. Don’t hesitate to book with Andrew. You will not be disappointed.

Your Stirling tour itinerary

- First we will head for Stirling Castle. This takes one hour from the centre of Edinburgh. You'll get a private tour of Stirling Castle with some free time of your own. - Next to Stirling Bridge for heroic, bloody tales of William Wallace. - Bring a packed lunch or alternatively you can buy lunch to go from a Stirling bakery that's very popular with the locals. - We then cross over the Highland Boundary Line and into the lochs and glens, stopping first at Loch Lubnaig and then onto the Falls of Dochart. - We visit the private Kinnel estate, once home to a notorious Highland Chief. - If time allows then we travel the length of Loch Tay to Kenmore and up over a little used mountain pass where you may sample some complimentary whisky with jaw dropping scenery. This tour is entirely customisable and can easily be altered to fit a tighter schedule for a shore excursion.
