Hello, my name is Peter. Pleased to meet you! I was born and raised in Maastricht and I took up guiding during my student days. So, you could say I am an experienced guide. As I have studied history the region around Maastricht is a gem! Long before the Roman period there are traces of human activity to be found around Maastricht. And, yes the Romans were the ones that build the first bridge that resulted in the birth of Maastricht. But there's so much more to see in our fairly small but very interesting city! It's a history that spans about 2000 years but a story that continues to be written. To me history is a living thing because it involves people: People, past, present and future! This border region between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands is interesting. Not only because of the three different languages being spoken but also because of its rich history that has given us the way of live we have today! Personally I love this bordertown because it has a feeling of "chique", of "la bella vita". We tend to enjoy life which is not to be mistaken for being lazy or slow! Besides being a Guide in my spare time I work in social wellfare in Liège, play drums with the Gumbo Jazzband and love our biggest and most important cultural festival: Carnival! Showing my guests around and make them feel at home with us is always a pleasure! If you're American, British, Japanese, French, Moroccan, Brasilian or any other nationality you'll enjoy being with us. I have been training students in guiding techniques for 16 years at Alternatives Formations in Wandre, Belgium. I started as a tourguide in the caves of Mount Saint Peter as a student in 1982 and have been an independant city guide since 1998. For certain monuments or tourist attractions in Maastricht only incompany guides are allowed.

Maastricht is well known for it's military history with it's bridge and strategic position. Once referred to as the ''Key to the Netherlands", it is also the first city in the kingdom of the Netherlands to witness industrial development. Pierre Regout sets up his first factory in 1834 on the grounds of a former monastery close to the northern defences of the city, known as the ''Bossche fronten", or ''Lage fronten". The factory is a huge succes! As early as around 1860, he employs about 5000 men, women and children in his factories. The town defenses are only a few steps away from the industrial hub so they are an integral part of our visit. We'll reach them by walking through the old industrial harbour known as ''Bassin''. The Maastricht defenses were developed by military architects as Dumoulin and Vauban, Louis the XIV's world famous fortification's engineer. Nowadays they are integrated into the Frontenpark and the old walls are now a haven for rare lizards, birds and bats as well as for the visitors.
After we meet at Pierre Regout's statue on Bosschstraat, I will introduce you to early 19th century Maastricht and to the entrepreneur Regout. We will then enter the old factory at the Sphinxpassage where history is literally on the wall! We'll travel through the factory's history as well as Maastricht's social history. We'll learn about the techniques used and we will see some 19th and early 20th century tableware. Walking through the redeveloped area we cross the street into the « Bassin », the former harbour. It's just a few steps from the Bassin to reach the Frontenpark and it's interesting military history. All of a sudden we are in green haven with an interesting past! We come back through some of the new developments on the Sphinx site in order to end our tour on top of the old « Eiffel » building where some spectacular views of Maastricht and the surrounding countryside await you at the Rooftop bar! * Itinerary can be customized to suit your needs.
