Hello, my name is Peter. Pleased to meet you! I was born and raised in Maastricht and I took up guiding during my student days. So, you could say I am an experienced guide. As I have studied history the region around Maastricht is a gem! Long before the Roman period there are traces of human activity to be found around Maastricht. And, yes the Romans were the ones that build the first bridge that resulted in the birth of Maastricht. But there's so much more to see in our fairly small but very interesting city! It's a history that spans about 2000 years but a story that continues to be written. To me history is a living thing because it involves people: People, past, present and future! This border region between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands is interesting. Not only because of the three different languages being spoken but also because of its rich history that has given us the way of live we have today! Personally I love this bordertown because it has a feeling of "chique", of "la bella vita". We tend to enjoy life which is not to be mistaken for being lazy or slow! Besides being a Guide in my spare time I work in social wellfare in Liège, play drums with the Gumbo Jazzband and love our biggest and most important cultural festival: Carnival! Showing my guests around and make them feel at home with us is always a pleasure! If you're American, British, Japanese, French, Moroccan, Brasilian or any other nationality you'll enjoy being with us. I have been training students in guiding techniques for 16 years at Alternatives Formations in Wandre, Belgium. I started as a tourguide in the caves of Mount Saint Peter as a student in 1982 and have been an independant city guide since 1998. For certain monuments or tourist attractions in Maastricht only incompany guides are allowed.

Overview of your Maastricht tour

Maastricht, the 30th "Old Hickory" infantry division, the fortress of Eben-Emael, Margraten and Henry-Chapelle war cemeteries, Withuis, The Siegfried line, Stavelot, La-Gleize, Bastogne. . . These are just a handful of the names that will pop up when we talk about the Second World War in our region. A region that is close to the borders of Belgium and Germany. Not one, but two World Wars erupted in that same region! Although the second World War is much more known, there are some really interesting facts and locations to be visited that refer to the First World War. How about the burning down of the bordertown of Visé? The railway viaduct at Moresnet build by russian POW's in 1916/17? Join me in this tour to learn all about it.

Peter was a wonderful guide. His knowledge of the area is very interesting. He took us to the Cemetery and helped and guided my husband to where he wanted to go. We found out alot of information that we had been searching for. He even took us for pie and coffee and had books and photos for us to look through. An unforgettable day

We spent a long, wonderful day with Peter visiting the Bastogne War Museum and various other Battle of the Bulge sights in the area...plus the American cemetery (Margraten) near Maastricht. Peter was very knowledgeable and super enjoyable to spend the day with. Highly recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in history and the Battle of the Bulge.

Peter was exceptional on my tour. He was very knowledgeable about the town and the history behind it. It was a once in a lifetime tour that I am forever grateful for.

Your Maastricht tour itinerary

We will start our tour in Maastricht. The bridges over the river Meuse played a vital role in 1940 and 1944. We'll see the exact spot where the small Dutch defence force stood up to a major German force. On our tour we'll see some of the "Stolpersteine" (stumbling stones) in memory of our citizens that were deported: Jewish, Gipsy, or resistance fighter. Next is the fortress of Eben-Emael. Here the 2nd World War started in the west in the early morning of may 10th 1940. We'll have a look at Eben-Ezer's tower, a symbol to peace, erected in the late 1940's/1960's. Margraten or Henry-Chapelle War Cemetery are a reminder of the folly of war and are obligatory on my tours: "Lest we forget". After all it's the human history that is so important to us all! The tour can be prolonged and adapted to visit parts of the battlefields of the Battle of the Bulge.
