The synagogue of Casale Monferrato and the Elisabeth de Rotschild Foudation
Overview of your Stresa tour
Casale hides one of the most beautiful synagogues of Northern Italy. It was built and partially decorated in the 16th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Jewish community embellished it with precious woods and gold. In 1968 the synagogue was completely restored. Today the synagogue isn't regularly used but it opens for visits and special events. The Museum of Lights is located underground, in the former oven for the Matzot, and shows a collection of contemporary art Channukkiot started in 1994. The tour continues to Rivalta Bormida, a tiny village surrounded by the Monferrato hills, where stands the XV cent. palace Lignana di Gattinara. Some rooms of this attractive building are home to the "Pride and Prejudice" exhibit, with original pictures and documents relating to the history of the Jewish people, and host an amazing collection of objects (paintings, dresses, jewels, artworks. . . ) belonging to a branch of the Rotschild family.
Your Stresa tour itinerary
The tour starts from Lake Maggiore, any accommodation in Arona, Stresa or Baveno. After a 90min drive approx (motorway), we'll reach Casale Monferrato. The complex of the synagogue hosts also the Jewish Art and History Museum (or Silver's Museum) that is located in the former women gallery of the synagogue. It hosts an extraordinary collection of judaica, particularly silver cerimonial objects and embroideries. o, in the hilly region south of the Lakes District. The tour continues to the village of Rivalta Bormida (45 minutes), where we'll allow us some time for lunch and then visit the Palazzo Lignana di Gattinara. The drive back lasts a couple of hours.
