Hi, my name is Alessandro and I'm a passionate Sicilian archaeologist and tour guide. I hold a BA in Preservation of Cultural Herigate, with a specific focus on classical archaeology, completed by a further Postgraduate qualification in Sicily and Magna Graecia Archeology. My main research interest is on Magna Graecia and Sicily Archaeology, about which I published different scientific papers. I was also assistant to the Chair of Greek and Roman Archaeology at the BA Sciences of Tourism of the "Università degli Studi della Calabria". I have worked as an excavation supervisor in Abruzzo, Puglia, Calabria and Sicily. I am a Licensed Guide for Sicily since 2014. What I love most about my job is sharing my passion for the land with others and spreading knowledge of the territory and culture of Sicily as I know her. I am always delighted to guide my visitors into an unconventional world of archaeology, food, wine and traditions. According to me, a place must not only be visited, but felt and lived in all of its multifaceted features. This is the concept I have of any excursion. We must not be tourists, we have to be part of the society in which we stay, blending our customs with their way to live. I think that this belief, in combination with my expertise acquired through extensive and continuing academic research and high-grade studies, makes me a totally different kind of tour guide. According to me "Sicily must be experienced, leisurely and in depth". This is the philosophy through which I live on my island. BA in Classical Archaeology Postgraduate Diploma in Classical Archaeology Long experience of excavations in Sicily and South Italy Experience as assistant to the Chair of Greek and Roman Archaeology at the University Publications related to the field of Roman and Greek Archaeology Licensed Tour Guide for Sicily

Overview of your Modica tour

On this tour, through my historic knowledge for these sites and my passion for their century-old food&wine tradition, Modica and Cava Ispica will strike your imagination by virtue of its different landscapes, monuments, and amazing delicacies. The city of Modica, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, was the the capital of one of the most important feudal states in South Italy. Nestled between two narrow valleys, Modica features a twine of restricted alleys disclosing wonderful Medieval and Baroque buildings. The territory of Modica rises in a geographical landscape whose beauty is more than rare. It boasts a series of deep canyons cutting the calcareous Hyblaean plateau. The white limestone is the absolute protagonist of the history of Cava Ispica. Prehistoric rock-cut tombs, Paleo-christian catacombs, rocky churches and dwellings were all dug by human beings along the cliff faces of these canyons since the 2nd millennium BC.

We were taken on a great walking tour of the incredible towns of Ragusa and Modica. Our guide explained the development of the towns in their unique landscape and blended history with architecture to make sense of what we were seeing. Great use of the car avoided unnecessary walking and ensured we experienced the tour in comfort. Had lunch in a great local trattoria recommended by the guide and had time to sample authentic Modican chocolate. Recommended for unique Sicilian architecture and atmosphere.

Alessandro did a fantastic job taking us around Ragusa and Modica. His knowledge of history and ability to present it in an interesting and engaging way is superb! Alessandro has planned our day in such a way that we were not interrupted by rain at all but instead had a delicious lunch in a local non-touristy restaurant. Alessandro also gave us great dinner recommendations in Noto before we arrived so that I was able to make reservations and detailed tips on how to spend our time in Siracusa the next day

Alessandro was excellent. His knowledge and enthusiasm is unmatched by any guide we have ever had. He was our guide through 2 days. He took us though many sights and provided history, information, and insight to the way people lived. He is an expert in every place we went and he answered every question we had on any topic. Additionally, he looked after all our needs and customized our trip to the kind of experiences we wanted. He is simply the best guide we have had on our entire trip by a large margin.

Alessandro was an extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and warm guide. His passion for archeology, history and culture was infectious. This tour was customized for us and we enjoyed it thoroughly. As with the tour we took with Alessandro the day before, we were so impressed by his ability to make the complicated history of the area come alive.
