Hi, I'm Emmanuel. I have been living in a village near Dunkirk for 15 years. I worked as a travel agent for a few years before beginning as a tour guide on a WWI site in Belgium, near Ypres in 2014. Right after that, I was offered the chance to work in Dunkirk, and I couldn't miss this opportunity! I consider myself lucky to live in a place with a rich history like Dunkirk. I have been passionate about the history of WWII since I was a child, and I love guiding people around, telling them about the history of the city, especially about Operation Dynamo. Many visitors had their father or grandfather in Dunkirk in 1940, and I sometimes learn a lot from them. In my opinion, a pleasant tour is more a conversation than giving a monologue, so every tour is different from the previous one. I easily adapt so feel free to ask if you have any wishes regarding the tour you would like to follow, and remember that talking about the war won't stop us from having a good time together. Overview of your Dunkirk tour
Operation Dynamo was the biggest military naval evacuation of all times. From the 26th of May to the 4th of June 1940, 338, 226 soldiers were evacuated from the Dunkirk area! During this 2 hours tour, I will take you on the steps of these British, French and Belgian soldiers. You will discover how the topography of the region played an important role in this vital evacuation. I will take you to see the East Mole, this 1, 5km long jetty which was the main place to embark to England, you will see our wide beaches, and understand why this huge evacuation was not planned to be as successful as it has turned to be. We will go to the British Memorial and Military Cemetery to pay a tribute to the fallen and missing soldiers from the British Expeditionary Force, and see a authentic Little Ship from 1940. You can customize this tour following your wishes, for example your father or grandfather experience, or if you you want to hear about how the movie « Dunkirk » was made and where it was filmed.
