Who is this Mestrovic guy, you may think.

Well, “Croatian Michelangelo” as we like to compliment our most prominent artist of the 20th century was originally from the rural Dalmatian village of Otavice, 40 miles from Split. The story of his great international success is set up in the turbulent years of the two world wars and many political changes in his homeland of Croatia. The villa in Split that now houses much of his art was his private investment and design project where he got to live with his family just a few years before the 2nd World War started, after which he decided to move to US.

This old Venetian border town is where I was born and where I grew up. I know all its narrow streets where I used to play with my friends in the ruins of the old abandoned houses.
Cathedral Square, over its whole length, we used to play soccer, was to be chased away by the priest or nun that took care of the church.

Growing up I started noticing some things that were arousing my curiosity. Some details on the houses, some inscriptions in strange languages. . . It became much more than only our old playground, it became my foremost interest.

In my teens, I started reading about it's history, art, architecture. From that moment on I was swallowing all the books I could lay my hands on. Turning 28 I moved to The Netherlands for my family. I worked hard, but still, I read all I could find. Then I started widening my knowledge putting Korcula with it's history an in broader perspective of the Balkans, Europe, World. . .

All of this knowledge harvested through all these years I will eagerly share with you.

We start with the liveliest spot in the city - the main promenade "Riva". Explore the magnificent Diocletian's Palace - a UNESCO World Heritage site that represents the best preserved late-antiquity building in the world.

Built at the end of the 3rd century AD, the Diocletian's Palace is definitely the most significant Roman site in Croatia. With locals still living within its walls, it is a living monument of one era and certainly a "must see" when visiting Split.

Take a short car ride to the iconic Mestrovic Gallery proudly housing the works of I. Mestrovic - the most outstanding Croatian sculptor.

Mestrovic is alongside Auguste Rodin, my favourite sculptor. His villa, that is today's gallery, is one of the most beautiful places in Split. Even if you are not into sculpture, the serenity of the wonderful gallery garden, where some of the bronze works are scattered, the views of the Adriatic and the extraordinary life of Ivan Mestrovic that I will be telling you about, leaves no one indifferent.

We will head to the area of Sv. Antun where we will discover a family run OPG. There you will be guided through the subtle art of honey, gin and olive oil making. You will also have the opportunity to tast the products that are made organically by them.

Known not only for it's beautiful clear blue water, Lumbarda is also a renowned wine country. Producing it's own grape variety known as Grk, we will take you through the vineyards and have a first stop to show the particularities of the wine, soil and grape varieties produced here.

We will then head to one of the family run wineries to taste their own production of this rare wine and enjoy listening to the importance of the history and culture surrounding the production and sale of wine on the island.

Finally we will head back into Korcula where you will be dropped off infront of a local Wine Shop.

Ivan Meštrović, very often called Croatian Rodin, is the most famous Croatian artist. He was one of the greatest 20th century European sculptors, and probably the greatest sculptor on the religious matter since the time of Renaissance.

Originally, it was the artist's residence, where he lived in the 1930's. The Mestrović Gallery was started in 1950s after a substantial donation of art from the artist himself.

Let me tell you the story of his life that is so intense and full of twists that only life can write such destinies.

After that we will explore together the compact, entirely pedestrianized center of town and 1700 y/o Diocletian's palace. We will walk through the palace fortifications and gates, visit the Jewish ghetto and of course admire one of the main symbols of Split - its main promenade, the seafront - Riva.
