Plovdiv sightseeing - a walking tour around my spectacular home city

Plovdiv is an eternal city. Its foundations on the 7 hills by Maritza River were laid some 8 000 years ago. Plovdiv is older than Rome, Athens and Constantinople. The city is contemporary of Troy and Mycenae. It is the second oldest European city and the oldest still living city in Europe. Plovdiv is all in one: a Thracian and classical Greek polis, the pride of Philip of Macedonia, biggest and most important city in Thrace under the Roman Empire, a centre of Byzantinism, a stronghold of the Bulgarians, a dream of the crusaders, a magnificent and wealthy and city. Famous historical monuments include the Roman Stadium, the Ancient Theatre, the charming Old Town etc. Plovdiv is a spectacular city combining millennial history, unique laid-back atmosphere and natural beauties including the picturesque 6 hills, the peaceful Maritsa River and the mystical Rhodope Mountains nearby. Considered as the most beautiful city in Bulgaria Plovdiv was the European capital of culture in 2019.
