Explore Colonia your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Colonia tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Colonia for every interest, including:

- Food and Drink tours: Try a chivito at a neighbourhood parrilla, sip a medio y medio by the river at sunset, and head into the countryside to Los Cerros de San Juan for a cellar tour and Tannat tasting paired with local cheeses.

- History tours: Wander the Barrio Histórico through the Portón de Campo, climb the lighthouse over the ruins of the Convento de San Francisco, walk Calle de los Suspiros, and visit the restored Real de San Carlos bullring and the Museo Portugués.

- Family tours: Cruise cobblestones by golf cart, climb the lighthouse together, build sandcastles at Playa Ferrando with an ice-cream stop nearby, and visit Granja Colonia to see quirky collections and taste house-made dulce de leche.

The historic centre is very walkable, while wineries and farms sit outside town—ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or tours with private transportation for those countryside stops.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Colonia inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Colonia

From Colonia, it’s easy to branch out to nearby cities and riverfront spots, picking day trips and tours that match your interests without long travel days.

Montevideo: Uruguay’s capital fills a full day with character; start in the Ciudad Vieja for cobbled lanes and street art, walk the Rambla for wide water views, and plan lunch at the Port Market, while your tour can lean into architecture, local markets, and time in neighbourhoods like Palermo and Cordón for culture and food.

Carmelo and the wine coast: North of Colonia, vineyards and olive groves line quiet roads, tasting rooms pour tannat and fresh olive oil, river beaches sit near a small swing bridge, and this suits you if you want an easy day with winery visits, countryside cooking, cycling routes, and small-town plazas, with your tour timed around tastings.

Buenos Aires, Argentina: The ferry turns this into a smooth international day trip; explore San Telmo’s antique-lined streets, La Boca’s colour, and Recoleta’s grand avenues, add a café stop and a parrilla if that’s on your list, and shape your tour around design shops, street photography, or classic sites without rushing.

Nueva Helvecia (Colonia Suiza) and Colonia Valdense: A short drive brings you to immigrant towns known for bakeries, cheese, and tidy squares; stroll the compact centres, sample local beer and dairy, see simple heritage landmarks and riverside parks, and focus your tour on food traditions and rural scenery.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Colonia most travellers miss.
