Explore Terlingua your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Terlingua tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Terlingua for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Hike the Grapevine Hills trail to Balanced Rock at sunrise, then follow the Rio Grande through Santa Elena Canyon with time for a riverside picnic. Night tours focus on dark‑sky stargazing, with chances to spot javelina and great horned owls along quiet desert tracks.

History tours: Explore the Terlingua Ghost Town’s Chisos Mining Company ruins and cemetery while hearing stories of quicksilver booms and busts. With a high‑clearance 4x4, your guide can take you to the Mariscal Mine site in Big Bend National Park for a safe look at remote smelter remains.

There’s no public transit and sights are spread across long distances on rough roads. Private transportation is standard here — ask about chauffeured tours in a high‑clearance vehicle or tours that include the driving.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Terlingua inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Terlingua

Set up your Terlingua day trips as a simple day trip tour to nearby mountains, canyons, and small towns, so you cover big scenery without changing your base.

Big Bend National Park: Follow the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to overlooks and short trails that show off the Chihuahuan Desert and the Rio Grande, then hike part of the Santa Elena Canyon trail or walk the Chisos Basin for cooler air and wide views; your tour can lean into hiking, birding, or photography, depending on what you want most.

Big Bend Ranch State Park: Cruise FM 170, known for cliffside bends and river pullouts, and step into Closed Canyon or the Hoodoos area for quick walks among volcanic rock; this route suits scenic drives, geology fans, and sunset photos, and it pairs well with a picnic by the river.

Marfa: Trade desert trails for art and small-town culture, browsing galleries, the courthouse lawn, and coffee spots, then swing by the open-air Prada Marfa installation on the way back; this works if you like architecture, design, and slower street time after days on dirt roads.

Alpine and Fort Davis Scenic Loop: Wander Alpine’s murals and local shops, then head to Fort Davis for a mountain byway with pullouts, wildlife spotting, and frontier history at the fort site; the mix fits history buffs and road trippers who want cooler elevations and long-view lookouts in one run.

Private tours out of Terlingua make these day trips flexible, so you can keep plans light or stack stops while still leaving room for breaks in the heat.
