Overview of your Taos tour

Join me to explore hiking trails in the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument! The popular hikes on my tour expose travelers to the ecology, geography, history, and special sights in this area of natural beauty. Be on the lookout for bighorn sheep, wildflowers, deep river gorge, and other wildlife! I have hiked the trails on this tour many times. I am knowledgeable and passionate to share with you all about New Mexico's topography and the history behind the trails. Did you know The Slide Trail used to be a highway from Santa Fe to Taos, a drive that took 17 hours!? (Today 1.5 hours. ) The trails are easy, but wear proper clothing and shoes. These hikes are not for conditioning, but rather scenic, to take in flora and fauna and petroglyphs. Not available during winter months with snow. Two day notice. March is known as the Mud Month! Melting snow usually makes this tour impassable. April, May, September, October best months for this tour due to summer heat.

We were Julian's first group through Tours By Locals. We thoroughly enjoyed our full day hike. This was our first trip to New Mexico and we wanted to see what Taos has to offer. We were a group of four friends in our 50's/60's. Julian took us to three different locations that showed us the variety of terrain and flora in the Taos area. Each hike was @2 miles long for a total of 6 miles by the end of the day. We particularly enjoyed the middle hike that took us to a view of the Rio Grande Gorge.

Your Taos tour itinerary

We will begin the tour at an agreed-upon location and in your vehicle drive to: -Drive to sites, 1/2 hour - Visit the Slide trail overlooking the Rio Pueblo Gorge at the confluence of the Rio Grande Gorge, 1/2 hour - Hike La Vista Verde trail or Picuris trail in the Rio Grande Gorge, 2 hours. -Stop at the Earthship village after viewing the Rio Grande Gorge overlook from world famous Gorge bridge, 1/2 hour - Organic Lunch at Farmhouse restaurant, 1 hour, no host. This hike is classified as "easy. " Please note Taos is at 7, 000 feet elevation. If you are not accustomed to that altitude, canned oxygen is available in Taos. Bring appropriate hiking attire: shoes, clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and water! These hikes are not for physical conditioning, but rather to enjoy the spectacular scenery, including petroglyphs, thus, we will walk at a leisurely pace. Please do not outpace the guide.
