Join me for this tour highlighting the uplifting African American stories of the capital city. Through the Civil War to the Civil Rights era to present time, this tour will uplift and inspire your soul. I'll share music and speeches with you to bring this history to life. Shaw University- important in educating formally enslaved men and women and birthplace of SNCC where Ella Baker helped students change the face of the civil rights movement. Dr. Manassas Pope's home, a prominent African American doctor. The old Woolworth's store where sit-ins took place. MLKs trips to Raleigh. Black Main Street-thriving businesses contributed to the success of the black community during Jim Crow era. Haywood House -celebrate a child born enslaved who went on to become a leader of human rights causes throughout the world. Capitol building- who built the original building, removed & current statues . Freedom Park. Meet influential African Americas who have contributed the history including the architect.
Morning or afternoon tour times. Bathroom and drink break along the way. This is a walking tour. Flat surface. Average length: 1.5 miles. 9:00am/6:00 pm- Meet you in downtown Raleigh at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts. 9:15 am/6:15pm -We'll head just across the street to the campus of Shaw University and visit the Baker mural, and then outside of the Pope House (If open, we will go inside. May not be open- depending on tour time and day). 9:45am/6:45pm- We'll head to Fayetteville St. to Black Main Street and back to Fayetteville St. 11:00am /8:00 pm- Visit to Haywood House and the State Capitol building. 11:45am/ 8:45pm - End at the Freedom Park Extended add on hour: Only available during the day. We'll walk over to the previous Freeman's Bureau and historic Mordecai house. *(this tour can be adapted to A-A history of Durham, NC- message me if you want an A-A Durham tour )
