The Nāpau Trail guides explorers through the remnants of the Maunaulu eruptions. Maunaulu, meaning "growing mountain" in Hawaiian, birthed a shield volcano that erupted from 1969 to 1974, leaving behind a transformed terrain adorned with captivating geological formations. As you journey across lava streams and through lava channels, marvel at the delicate allure of lava trees, gaze into pit craters, and transport yourself to a time when molten rock flowed like water. Along this path, you'll encounter the intriguing "Old Pulu Factory, " adding another layer of history to your excursion.

During the period spanning from 1969 to 1974, the Mauna Ulu eruption unleashed a staggering 350 million cubic meters of molten lava from Kilauea's upper East Rift Zone, cascading down the cliffs and flowing towards the ocean.

Pit craters are hollows that typically emerge as a result of the earth fracturing during volcanic movements or expansions. They exhibit steep boundaries and tend to possess a more or less circular or oval outline, sometimes elongated in alignment with rift areas. Then I drive slowly down a narrow road at Honolii Beach to show surfers as they ride waves. I will narrate to you . Then we will drive through lush jungle over old bridges, past rivers, and waterfalls.
