Origins of Detroit discovering it's Polish heritage
Overview of your Detroit tour
At the suggestion of several of my travelers, I have brought back our tour to Hamtramck, Michigan. If you are not already aware, this area (which some refer to as a "hamlet") boasts that it presents "the world in two square miles. " Hamtramck was named after Jean Francois Hamtramck who was the first American commander of Fort Shelby, which was most important during the War of 1812; it was located in what is present-day downtown Detroit. Hamtramck was initially home to many Germans until the early 1900s when Polish immigrants arrived, bringing with them their heritage for most of the 20th century. To this day, Hamtramck remains synonymous with Polish culture. During our visit we will be enjoying a diverse area that still boasts delicious dishes offered at the Polish restaurant. During the day we plan on seeing and/or visiting a number of the sites below.
Your Detroit tour itinerary
• Meet up at your hotel or agreed location • Arrival and short tour of Hamtramck Historical Museum • Next stop will be at St. Florian Church. Saint Florian Catholic church was built in 1907 and it is stunning both inside and out. You feel like you've walked back in time with all the stained glass and ornate architecture. It's truly a breathtaking church. Since Hamtramck was Polish settled most of the parishioners are still a large majority Polish. • Lunch will be at Polish restaurant (not included / actual time will depend on size of tour group) You will have chance to selected "combo plate" with stuffed cabbage, pierogi, kielbasa, mashed potatoes, kraut and other accompaniments. • After lunch will visit stop at John Paul II Park, with a long mural and statue a top a pedestal, to honor the world's first Polish Pope. Tour can be customized upon request according to your interests and/or group size
