Explore Detroit your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Detroit tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Detroit for every interest, including:

History tours: Visit the Motown Museum at Hitsville U.S.A. to stand in Studio A, then see the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant where early Model Ts were built and the art deco Guardian Building’s vaulted lobby. Your tours can trace riverfront industry and stop at Belle Isle for Albert Kahn–designed landmarks.

Layover tours: Meet at DTW for a fast run to Dearborn to tour The Henry Ford or stroll Greenfield Village if time allows, or do a downtown loop past the Spirit of Detroit, Campus Martius, and the Guardian Building before returning with a firm TSA buffer. Guides can keep luggage in the vehicle and monitor traffic in real time.

Food and Drink tours: Compare rival coney dogs at American and Lafayette, sample cheeses and seasonal bites at Eastern Market, and finish with a craft beer in Corktown or paczki in Hamtramck. Many food tours weave in stops at new bakeries and long-time family delis to match your tastes.

Downtown and Midtown are walkable in pockets, but public transit is limited beyond the QLINE and buses; you can book a chauffeured tour or ask your guide for tours with private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Detroit inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Detroit

From Detroit, college towns, river cities, and lakeshore hubs are close enough for relaxed day trips, and your tours can dive into art, cars, food, or waterfront walks without rushing.

- Ann Arbor: A lively campus scene, indie bookshops, murals, and leafy trails suit curious minds; wander the university core, browse Kerrytown markets, and let your tour balance coffee stops with gallery time or the arboretum.

- Dearborn: Automotive heritage meets one of North America’s best Middle Eastern food scenes; explore industrial history, sample shawarma and sweets along Warren Avenue, and shape your tour around museums and neighbourhood flavours.

- Toledo, Ohio: Known for glass art and a compact downtown by the river; visit the art museum and glass pavilion, check out street murals, then stroll the riverfront while your tour lines up an easy lunch and a quick craft stop.

- Port Huron: Clear blue water, a lighthouse skyline, and big freighters sliding past the boardwalk; walk the Blue Water River Walk, see Fort Gratiot Lighthouse from the grounds, and use your tour to add a small beach or coastal trail.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Detroit most travellers miss.
