Derry is Northern Ireland's second city, with the broad River Foyle running through it. Humans probably fished the river for thousands of years, but the city is strongly linked with St Columba, who founded a monastery there in the 6th Century. Derry is from the Irish DOIRE, meaning an Oak grove. It has a rich but turbulent history right up to the last century. On this tour, history is visible all around you but I will want to talk about life in Derry in the present day. The city centre is compact and suitable for a leisurely walk taking in the sights. You will certainly want to walk the 18th Century walls and visit St Columb's Cathedral. Visit the Bogside and hear about its violent past with evidence in memorials and murals.
