Camel racing is the most popular traditional sport in the UAE. The race track is out of the City on the way to Al Ain and you get to watch them being trained just after sunrise. Al Ain is a small city of seven oasis that have grown together over time. Sheikh Zayed, the father of the nation and founder of the UAE, used to live here before becoming the ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the country. The drive leads us through beautiful desert landscapes until we reach the greenest town in the UAE situated at the base of the Hajjar mountain range. A perfect opportunity to explore rural country life and the history of the Emirati people right at the root. A truly unique experience !
On our way we watch racing camels being trained at the Al Marmoom Camel Race track outside Dubai. In Al Ain, we visit the Al Jahili Fort, which used to be the summer residence of the Al Nahyan tribe. Today it houses a fantastic photo collection of Wilfred Thesinger, a world explorer, who lived and travelled through the Empty Quarter with the Bedouins. He was the first person to take pictures in the region. Next stop is the Palace Museum, which was the family residence of Sheikh Zayed until 1966. After strolling through the fruit and vegetable market, where the locals sell the produce of the Al Ain Oasis, we take a walk through a date palm plantation. The Al Ain Oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Before driving back to Dubai, we enjoy a nice authentic Emirati Lunch.
