Hello. Setsuko here. I specialize in tours of Nagano and Tokyo, but I can actually take you anywhere in Japan, like Kyoto, Nikko, or Hakone. I choose these days to live in the country. Why? Because I'm an animal lover - particularly dogs, cats, and horses. Also my home town - Karuizawa - is only an hour from Tokyo by the shinkansen. Karuizawa is a wonderful blend of nature and culture. I can't imagine living anywhere else in Japan now. I do love Tokyo though. I know both places very well. I've lived and traveled in many other countries. In New Zealand and Australia, for example, I worked for twelve years as an interpreter and guide. I often found myself far off the beaten path. Indeed, my most memorable experiences came from what local people showed me there. That's just the sort of experience I'd like to give you. When I returned to Japan I developed a keen interest in its history, its way of life, and its cuisine. I made the decision to get a national guide's qualification. And here I am. I must say, too, how much I enjoy meeting new people. I'd really like to share with you my knowledge of my society's many nooks and crannies. Japan is an intriguing blend of the traditional and the modern and exploring this blend is the very best reason for coming to visit us. I hope to see you soon. In this tour, I would like to take you to see a special reserve created in 1964 for wild macaque monkeys. It's one of the most famous tourist attractions in Japan. I've been many times because it's one of my favorite places. I'm always very glad to go again, regardless of the season. I've not only spent a long time learning about the park itself, and walking to it gives me the chance to explain something about its history, the structure of monkey society, and what it means to be in the natural environment in Japan. My favorite part of the tour is when I'm able to show the monkeys bathing in the hot spring there. This is world famous because they do it in the winter in the snow, though they "take the waters" at other times, too. A park ranger is always on hand and so am I, to translate your questions and his or her answers. All my tours are customizable, and this one can be done by train, bus, or taxi. I'm very happy to advise on the difference between the ways in which it can be done.
• 8:30 am Meet and greet at your hotel or at Nagano station • 9:00 am Take the bus or a train or a chartered taxi to the park • 10:30 am Walk 30 minutes to the main viewing point • 11:00 -12:30 am At the park itself (the only place in the world where wild monkeys bathe in a hot spring) • 12:30 am Walk back 30 minutes • 1:00 pm Lunch at a charming cafe in the local village • 2:00 pm Take the bus or a train or a chartered taxi back to Nagano city • 3:30 pm Farewell at your hotel or at Nagano station This itinerary is just an example. It's customizable and it's therefore provisional. The timing also depends to some extent on what transport you choose, and what other activities you might like to include.
