Explore Medan your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Medan tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Medan for every interest, including:

Layover tours: Get picked up at Kualanamu International Airport, then zip into town for a timed circuit of Tjong A Fie Mansion, a photo stop at Maimun Palace and the Grand Mosque, plus a quick bowl of soto Medan or a taste of fresh durian at Ucok Durian before your guide returns you to the terminal with a safe buffer.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Head to Bukit Lawang in Gunung Leuser National Park for a guided rainforest trek to look for orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys and hornbills, with the option to float back on the Bohorok River in rubber tubes. For a shorter outing near the city, visit Asam Kumbang Crocodile Park and pair it with a stroll on the Belawan mangrove boardwalk to spot kingfishers and mudskippers.

Hiking tours: Start before dawn in Berastagi for a sunrise hike up Mount Sibayak, where you’ll walk past warm fumaroles, then soak in the Lau Sidebuk-debuk hot springs after the descent. Or drive to Tongging for the stairs and trails around the Sipiso-piso waterfall viewpoints, with time for a village lunch overlooking Lake Toba.

Getting around: The airport rail link runs to Medan Station and some blocks around Kesawan are easy to walk, but sights are spread out and public transit is not visitor-friendly. Ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or a private vehicle so you can move efficiently between stops.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Medan inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Medan

Use Medan as your hub and spend the day in the highlands, jungle, and cool river valleys nearby, choosing day trips that match your pace and the kind of tours you enjoy most.

- Berastagi and Mount Sibayak: Hike an active volcano on a well‑used trail for crater views and sulphur vents, soak in nearby hot springs after, and browse Berastagi’s fruit and flower market for Karo snacks; ideal if you want a mix of hiking, local food, and big scenery in one day.

- Bukit Lawang, Gunung Leuser National Park: Take a guided jungle walk on marked paths to look for orangutans, thomas leaf monkeys, and hornbills, then cool off by the river or try gentle tubing; strong for wildlife lovers and photographers who want real rainforest without complex logistics.

- Sipiso‑piso Waterfall and Tongging: Stand at viewpoints over a 120‑metre fall dropping into the Lake Toba caldera and visit a lakeside village for simple Karo meals and ridge‑top photos; good if you prefer light walking with big payoffs and clear, open views.

- Dua Warna Waterfall, Sibolangit: Hike through shaded forest to pools where minerals create two layers of blue and milky turquoise water, and listen for birdlife along the trail; suits active travellers who like a steady hike and a cool finish in nature.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Medan most travellers miss.
