Explore Balikpapan your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Balikpapan tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Balikpapan for every interest, including:

Layover tours: With a short window from BPN, stroll the Margomulyo Mangrove boardwalk to look for proboscis monkeys, then sample Balikpapan’s favourite chilli crab at a Kepiting Kenari restaurant before a sunset photo at Melawai Beach and a fast drop‑off back at the terminal.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Spend a half day at Samboja Lestari to see the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’s forest school areas and the sun bear sanctuary with pre‑booked access and a conservation briefing. For a rainforest fix, walk the canopy bridges at Bukit Bangkirai or track hornbills and pitcher plants on a guided loop in the Wain River Protected Forest.

Boat tours: Glide by klotok or speedboat through Balikpapan Bay’s mangroves at golden hour to spot proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, and water monitors, with stops at a stilt‑house village like Kampung Atas Air for coffee on a wooden jetty. Your guide can also arrange a small boat to explore quieter creeks where cameras and binoculars shine.

Getting around: Public transport is limited and sights are spread out, so walking isn’t practical beyond a few blocks; book tours with private transportation or ask your local guide for a chauffeured car and pier transfers.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Balikpapan inside and out.
