Rostock & Warnemünde - How it was to live in East-Germany

Until 1990 Rostock and Warnemünde were part of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) - a country that does not exist anymore. The coast and the Baltic Sea functioned as a border. People tried to escape the GDR also via the Baltic Sea - many tragedies, but also happy ends.

On this tour we will set the focus on GDR-times. We will visit the major sights of Rostock and Warnemünde and besides that I will tell you about life in GDR-times, how people tried to pass the borders, how people started to discuss about and demonstrate against the East-German system, how the borders opened and how life changed after reunification. I will share personal experiences with you: how a West-German parcel smelled, how it was to stand in a West-German supermarket. Enjoy a trip back to the past with someone who grew up in the GDR while experiencing the beautiful life now in Rostock & Warnemünde!

Highlights of Mecklenburg: Fairytale Castle of Schwerin & Medieval Hanseatic Architecure of Rostock

Departure from the cruise terminal at Warnemuende, one of the fascinating seaside resorts. A 1-hour-train-ride will take vou to Schwerin. Passing the historic city centre we arrive at the castle. Enjoy the sight of the Castle Gardens with its impressive orangerie.

Get the "royal" atmosphere where the Dukes of Mecklenburg used to live. Opportunity to visit the inside of the castle (Please note: The castle is closed for the public on Mondays!) and afterwards time for lunch. Going east-wards in the afternoon the Hanseatic town of Rostock is waiting for you. Let's have a closer look to the gothic church of St. Mary's with nearly 800 years of history. Passing alongside the Town Hall we will walk down towards the University sqare dotted with official buildings like The Guard, The Court, The University.

Time for shopping before we will return to Warnemuende cruise pier.

Warnemünde - Walk, See and Savor - Private Tour

Warnemünde is a popular sea side resort at the Baltic coast which preserved the charm of an old fishing village: colorful fishing-boats return every morning from sea surrounded by white seagulls to sell fresh or smoked fish or fish in a roll, gabled fishermen's and captain's houses with beautifully carved doors line the shore of the Old River, a broad beach invites you to burrow your feet into the fine sand or to relax in a beach chair. What a lovely place to be!

On this tour I will show you the beauty of Warnemünde. We will find out, how long stretched these small looking fishermen's house really are, why fishermen ordered their wives and daughters to stay at home, while Edvard Munch (painter of "The Scream") painted at Warnemünde's beach and what "chicken gods" are. As a special treat we will have excellent coffee and cake with an extraordinary view over Warnemünde and the coast from the highest building in town.

Shore excursion: Jewish Heritage and historical highlights of Berlin - Day Trip from Warnemunde

The Jewish story and Berlin are intertwined in history. Berlin was formed by Jews and arguably even got its name by its citizens.
I have a deep personal interest in this specific part of history. I didn't know it when I moved to Berlin, but the story of Berlin struck a note, that I couldn't shake. During my history studies I mostly studied the Germans, and the 3rd Reich's military. But since I live in Berlin, it's civil history intrigues me.
With that in mind I'd like to take you along on the journey of discovery I have had; but I'll short-track ik in one day, not 10 years.

Join me in this full day experience and discover Berlin highlights including concentration camp Sachsenhausen.

We will visit the Minster of Doberan, a cistercian church from the 13th century, which once belonged to a cloister. It is my favorite church in the world and a pearl of brick architecture. We will visit it from inside and outside. I will tell you how long it took in medieval times to produce bricks and how many you needed to build such a church.

We drive further through a lovely landscape to Kühlungsborn, a popular seaside resort at the Baltic coast. Here we will see an old watch tower from GDR-times. I will give you an insight about life in GDR and why and how people tried to escape the country.

Our last stop will be Rostock, a more than 800 years old Hanseatic town with beautiful gabled houses and old university and brick churches. Learn about an arrow-stork and if all windows at the town hall are real windows. We will visit St. Mary's church which is known for its astronomical clock from 1472. With the calendar of that clock you can even calculate on which weekday someone is born.

Schwerin and Rostock - an old rivalry, a deep love, two towns so different and still so beautiful in their own way. Join me on this tour to the town where I was raised and the town where I live today!

Schwerin - oldest town of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, residence of dukes for centuries, known for its beauty - surrounded by lakes and forests, with a fairytale castle in its heart.

Rostock - old Hanseatic town, its wealth based on tradesmen and the Hanseatic league, one of the oldest Universities in Northern Europe, beautiful brick architecture.

Schwerin Castle and Palace Gardens during the German Federal Gardening Exhibition - the flowers are gone but the view over the cross-channel at the castle is still stunning. On this tour you will enjoy this view and stroll through the gardens.

Schwerin castle and the castle garden with an artificial grotto, old trees and great views. We will stroll through the castle garden an I will tell you why there is a door in the grotto and what a string of blue flowers shall symbolise in the castle garden.

Schwerin - Old Garden. The place was used for military parades, demonstrations at the end of GDR-times, and every summer it is the stage for an open-air-opera.

Schwerin - view at the Dom, or cathedral. Schwerin already became bishop's seat in 1160 - from here the Christian belief spread over Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The picture was taken during die German Federal Gardening Exhibition - the flowers and grass are gone, but Schwerin still is a beauty.

Rostock - an old Hanseatic town. The wealth of Hanseatic-league-times still show in the beautifully decorated gables. This one dates back to the end of the 15th century. Guess, what is located in this old building today? I will show you on this tour!

Rostock - St. Mary's Church, a beautiful piece of brick architecture, which is so typical for this region. At the main tower you will see a door far above the ground - what was it used for? I will let you know!

Rostock - University main building. The dukes of Mecklenburg, having their residence in the castle of Schwerin, also had an influence at the University of Rostock, founded 1418. You can see their statues above the main entrance.

Port of call Warnemuende: Tracing Jewish History in Northern Germany

Departing from the port of call we will travel onwards to Rostock and explore the city centre by walking along Jewish history, e. g. the modern monuments called "Gedenksteine" (memorial stones) which were placed in front of the houses where Jewish people used to live until the Nazi period.
We will visit the centre of Jewish history in Rostock which is based in a charming villa (formerly owned by the Jewish business man Max Samuel) in one of the most interesting districts of Rostock.
