Hi, I'm Ann M. , a native of Brooklyn and now a licensed New York City tour guide. Having spent my entire working career in the offices of Manhattan, there isn't a nook or cranny of NYC I'm not familiar with. So let me show you this amazing and fascinating town, especially via our wonderful subways, busses, ferries, and cable car! My mother came here from Scotland and my dad was a first generation New Yorker, born in Greenwich Village as a child of Irish immigrants who worked on the waterfront. Around the corner was the home of our scandalous Mayor Jimmy Walker. Our family then moved to the other great West Side neighborhood, Chelsea, now famous as the setting of the High Line. So how did we end up in Brooklyn? Simple: the apartments were cheaper! I was raised there in Park Slope, and my backyard was Prospect Park, the sibling of Manhattan's Central Park. Brooklyn in the '60s and '70s was a great place to grow up, with pizza, parks, street games, and the johnny pump (a. k. a. fire hydrant) to cool off in on a sweltering day. It was a beautiful time because my life was full of music from the radio and the records, most of which were produced in the offices and studios of nearby Manhattan. That love of music coincided with the beginning of my work life, where I was lucky enough to have a career in and around the music and entertainment businesses. I have composed several specialty tours for you based on these experiences. These tours will show you the venues, and tell you the inside stories, of your favorite musicians and the people who made them famous. Additionally, I can customize your New York experience to match your tastes and interests. So if you want to see Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Rockefeller Center, Wall Street and the Stock Exchange, we can go there and then have pizza in Little Italy, or wonton soup in Chinatown, or pickles on the Lower East Side. It's up to you, it's your vacation! So email, we'll tawk! We'll visit the venues, hear about the people who were responsible for bringing us two of the most prolific and popular artists of our times, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Both of them encountered John Hammond of Columbia Records and their lives - and ours - were never the same! Along the way, they played their guitars for small crowds in darkly lit Greenwich Village clubs such as The Gaslight Café and Gerde's Folk City. We'll visit these and several other locations, and talk about the characters who were part of the team that helped Bob and Bruce build their careers and launched them to stardom!
We'll start at the spot where Gerde's Folk City was, where Bob had his first paying gig Next Stop is The former home of The Bottom Line where Bruce was launched to Stardom then on to Washington Square Park to discuss how playing guitars on a Sunday afternoon turned into a major political battle. Then we'll explore Bleecker Street and the many clubs where many of our favorite artists played Turn onto MacDougal Street, the heart of the Greenwich Village music scene and see the various venues where both Bob and Bruce played such as The Gaslight Cafe and Cafe Wha? Over to the hotel where Bob and Joan Baez shared a space and the song she wrote about it. Look at Cafe Society and it's role in integrating music in New York in the 40s And we end at the former home of Bob and Suze Rotolo on West 4th Street and take a picture on the very street where the cover of Freewheelin' was taken.
