The tours I give always have a level of enthusiasm that is beyond scripted - because I live here and know that each day brings changes that will interest me and let me excite the tourist. I know the landmarks, but I know the locals, and I can make a tour of an "ordinary" neighborhood exciting because I also know the history of New York. I know why this is the Empire City, and can convey the excitement of discovery on virtually every corner. I have learned to love this city perhaps as one learns to love a beautiful yet willful woman. For me to make a real and true connection with it, I had to become better acquainted with New York through an elaborate series of "dates" with its neighborhoods and their histories. I felt the city telling me to learn more about it first; I had to prove that I cared. Every neighborhood, just as every business in them, is like a library of melodramas and romances written by its denizens, past and present, all informed by a history that is growing every day from the hands, hearts and minds of those people. By running and walking, and making contacts with people in these neighborhoods and businesses, I have fully embraced my lover's assignment. In fact, after entering all these neighborhoods and businesses I felt compelled to "check out" and read their literature. I have became a licensed tour guide. I taught students how to pass the city's tour guide exam at City College. I lead groups, both large and small, that include high school students, businessmen and other adults, as well as retirees, both from the U.S. as well as abroad. I love taking people around my city. This will be a full day's stroll through Greenwich Village, starting more or less central and coursing around the neighborhood, examining architecture, changes, and listening to the history of this unique little section of New York. Although I know the neighborhood, I may be as surprised as you with something we all will discover; learn to see and hear with fresh eyes and ears; this neighborhood is changing and growing now! Listen to people as the community wakes up over breakfast. Watch as the day begins, gets warmer; browse with your new neighbors through items you never thought you'd ever see - and be happy to know that people are as happy to see you in their world as you are to be in theirs. This may only be a day, but it will seem world's away from yesterday when you're done. Come - walk me!
Excellent personalized tour of Brooklyn; Bill created a curated selection of Brooklyn neighborhoods and special sites that interested me; I was impressed with his taste! I did not have a lot of time, but I saw plenty of spots that I will definitely return to, and now I know how best to get to them! There is nothing better than a "Tour by Local"!
Bill was very knowledgeable about the history and architecture of East Village and Greenwich. We are keen walkers and he covered a great distance but at an enjoyable pace. Provided a variety of experiences - art galleries, park concerts, fashion shops, great coffee shops (best coffee we have tasted in the US),and quirky restaurants. We ended up running a bit over time as we asked so many questions. Good value for the money. Only two of us on this tour so was pricey but worth it for this tour.
From your lodging, or where we agree to meet, we will take the subway, or other public transportation, down to the village - and have breakfast in a Village coffee shop! We'll discuss the affairs of the day, gossip with our neighbors, and then step out to the street - and walkthrough: - literature - Art - Crime - The twentieth-century culture to encounter a still vibrant always controversial community of citizens and community activists alternately going about their business - and trying to keep the world under control. We may go east, or examine the core of the Village around Washington Square, exploring a small part of the largest private university in the country. We may discover Kleine Deutschland and the East Village. Or we may see where Elizabeth Taylor's "boyfriend" (and ultimately first husband!) in Butterfield 8 lived. We will have lunch - somewhere! - and peruse the Far West Village as well.
