The day with an orientation of the Civil Rights unrest at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Your experience in Birmingham will begin in Kelly Ingram Park where police dogs and firehose attacked children in their protest for equal rights. Under the leadership of your Tour Guide, you will experience a self-guided visit through the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute provides a detailed presentation of life in a segregated system in Alabama. The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church is the site where the 4 little girls were killed when a bomb exploded underneath the church steps. Docents are tasked with leading a captivating tour of the Church. After lunch, we will travel to Collegeville where you will hear about the life of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and his courageous work for racial equality in Birmingham.
