Ullapool Full Day: Puffins, Boat trips & Amazing Scenery

We will travel North along the rugged yet stunning West coast, stopping off to stretch our legs and really drink in this unique place.

I started doing this tour because within only 15 minutes, you will completely understand why this area has been given a UNESCO Geopark status! From the oldest mountains in the world, wide open spaces and dramatic landscapes, we will travel through what we locally refer to as the empty lands to our main destination - Handa Island.

From here it's a short boat trip to spend a few hours exploring one of the most important seabird breeding grounds in Europe, and of course looking out for it's star - The iconc Puffin. There are over 100, 000 birds that use the island as a breeding area and the place is a cacophony of sound!

On our way back, we visit the quaint fishing village of Lochinver, an ancient MacLeod Castle ruin and more awesome scenery to ensure your day trip from Ullapool is one to remember!

A private tour through breathtaking scenery and across a remote part of the Highlands arriving at one of my favourite private homes, Dunrobin Castle, an impressive 189-room stately home belonging to clan Sutherland. After being used as a boarding school for seven years, it is now open to the public and you can walk through many of the rooms at your leisure. The French influence extends into the gardens, completed in 1850, with Barry taking inspiration from the French formal style of the Gardens of Versailles. There is a falconry display here which you can also admire.
After our visit, we make our way along the shores of Loch Fleet in the hope we catch a glimpse of some of the local wildlife before arriving in the beautiful town of Dornoch for possibly lunch or a visit to the Cathedral or the Jail ( gift shop ), the whisky shop or the museum.
On our return to Ullapool, we will take in Falls of Shin where depending on the time of the year, we might see salmon keeping up the waterfall.

I love this journey, taking in the beautiful natural settings, slowing down and explaining the rich history of the area!

Our first stop will be a 30m walk around and over Corrieshalloch Gorge which is a 60m box canyon which was carved by the glacial melt waters some 10, 000 years ago.

From here, we make our way to the Blackwater river. This is an incredibly beautiful spot and we take our time to get out and appreciate the setting.

We continue our travels through the county of Ross-shire and make our way for a sample of Uisge Beatha (Gaelic for Water of Life, otherwise known as Whisky!) Glen Ord has a rich history dating back to 1838 and "The Singleton" - a great example of Highland Malt. We will spend around an hour here for the distillery tour which ends with your very own dram!

The picturesque village of Beauly is our lunch stop and we will also have time to explore the ruined priory and learn of it's history before making our last stop - Loch Ness & Urquhart Castle for an hour to explore the ruins.

During our day we will picnic under the shadow of an ancient castle on the shores of Loch Assynt, hike up to caves where polar bear, reindeer and wolf bones have been found as animals sought shelter over 10, 000 years ago (optional) and take in some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in Scotland!
