Portimão is the main city of the western Algarve and used to be one of the main fishing harbour for sardines. The museum is actually located in an old factory which used to can sardines. Besides being an important fishing and cruise harbour, Portimão is famous for its narrow streets and its animated marina. One side of the town is bordered by the Arade river going to Silves to the north. It was used by the vickings to invade the area.
