Explore Napier your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Napier tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Napier for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Hike or 4WD to the Cape Kidnappers gannet colony in season, watching thousands of birds nest on the headland. Pair it with Te Mata Peak for short ridge walks and wide views, or a gentle loop at the Ahuriri Estuary to spot spoonbills and herons.

Layover tours: On a tight schedule from the cruise dock or airport, your guide can time a circuit of scenic lookouts, a quick Art Deco wander on Emerson Street, and a coffee stop before your return. If tides and season line up, you can add a fast trip to the gannets or a Te Mata Peak drive.

History tours: Explore Art Deco landmarks like the Daily Telegraph Building, the Municipal Theatre, and the National Tobacco Company in Ahuriri while hearing how the 1931 earthquake shaped the rebuild. Round it out at MTG Hawke’s Bay with exhibits and photos that bring the era into focus.

The compact CBD is easy to walk, but public transit is limited and key sites like Te Mata Peak and Cape Kidnappers sit outside town. Your guide can provide chauffeured tours or tours with private transportation for efficient hops between stops.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Napier inside and out.

Base yourself in Napier, then branch out on easy day trips to nearby peaks, beaches, waterfalls, and wine country so you see more of Hawke’s Bay without long drives.

- Te Mata Peak and Havelock North: Walk to big views, then drop into the village for coffee, bakeries, and local produce. Your tour can mix short tracks with food stops, or aim for sunset light over the Tukituki Valley.

- Hawke’s Bay wine country: Explore cellar doors in Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa, known for reds and crisp whites. Your tour can zero in on small producers, add vineyard views, and keep the driving easy between tastings.

- Waimarama Beach and Maraetotara Falls: Combine a wide, surf-friendly beach with a short bush walk to a photogenic waterfall. Your tour can time tides, fit in fish and chips, and find quiet spots for a swim in summer.

- Shine Falls and Boundary Stream: A scenic drive leads to one of the region’s tallest falls and native birdlife. Your tour can plan for gravel-road sections and pack a simple picnic for the shaded track.

- Cape Kidnappers coast and Clifton: Get coastal outlooks toward the gannet colony in season and stroll the shoreline when conditions allow. Your tour can set the day around tides and viewpoints for safe, easy access.
