Explore Akaroa your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Akaroa tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Akaroa for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Cruise the volcanic harbour to look for Hector’s dolphins, little blue penguins, and fur seals, or kayak calm bays with a guide. For land-based wildlife, walk Hinewai Reserve for native birds and regenerating bush.

Layover tours: If you’re tendering from a cruise, fit in a compact loop—a dolphin encounter, cheese tasting at Barry’s Bay, and photo stops on the Summit Road for crater views before returning to the pier. Your guide manages timing and tender schedules so you don’t miss the last boat.

History tours: Stroll French-named streets, step into the Akaroa Museum, and hear the story of French and British settlement. Many tours also include Onuku Church and the nearby treaty site, shared with respect for local tikanga.

The village is walkable, but hills and outer bays need wheels and there’s little public transport. Ask about chauffeured tours or private transportation to reach the summit and remote coves comfortably.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Akaroa inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Akaroa

From Akaroa, you can branch out to nearby cities and wild bays on easy day trips, swapping the harbour for hills, street art, and wide beaches that match your pace.

- Christchurch: Explore the Botanic Gardens, follow the Avon River through street art lanes, and graze your way through Riverside Market for local flavours. City fans get galleries and neighbourhood culture, while gardeners and families enjoy green space and easy walking; your tour can focus on food, art, or quiet parks.

- Lyttelton and the Port Hills: Ride the Summit Road for big harbour views, walk a section of the Crater Rim tracks, then drop into the port town for coffee and small shops. Hikers and photographers get dramatic scenery, and history buffs find stories in tunnels, memorials, and old waterfront corners.

- Okains Bay and the eastern bays: Swim or stroll along sandy curves at Okains and Le Bons, watch surf roll in, and wander estuary shallows with seabirds close by. Beach time suits kids and relaxed travellers, while culture fans can add a low-key heritage stop and coastal village life.

- Hinewai Reserve: Hike through regenerating native bush with bellbirds and fantails, climb to lookouts over the Pacific, and feel how quiet the peninsula can be. Nature lovers get birdlife and ferns on well-marked tracks, and walkers can choose short loops or longer climbs.

- Little River and Birdlings Flat: Cycle a stretch of the Little River Rail Trail, check local art and coffee, then hunt for smooth stones and agates on the long shingle at Birdlings Flat. Cyclists find flat miles and views, while geology and photography fans like big skies, rough surf, and wild shoreline.
