Hi, I’m Takashi. I live in Yakushima with my family and work as a nature guide, with the island’s forests, mountains, rivers, and ocean as my field. While raising our children here, we try to live a life that stays close to nature. My journey to Yakushima began with a desire to reconnect with nature myself. Before moving here, I was living and working in an environment somewhat disconnected from nature. Life was busy, and I felt that I was slowly losing touch with my natural rhythm and with my own center. Spending time in Yakushima’s forests, mountains, rivers, and ocean gradually helped me find that connection again. I wanted to live a life more deeply rooted in the earth. I wanted to take better care of myself, my family, and the natural world around me. And I wanted my children to grow up with nature as part of their everyday lives. With those wishes in my heart, my family and I moved to Yakushima in 2021. Before becoming a nature guide, I worked as a social worker, supporting children, young people, and their families. My work has changed, but one thing remains at the heart of what I do: paying close attention to the person in front of me. That is why I don’t believe in giving every guest exactly the same tour. Why did you come to Yakushima? What kind of experience are you hoping to have here? I keep these questions in mind and create each experience around your interests, fitness level, pace, and how you are feeling that day. I also stay flexible with the weather and the ever-changing conditions of nature, so that together we can make the most of each day. In my guiding, I value sharing knowledge, but I value something else just as much: leaving space to truly experience nature. I love sharing stories and knowledge about the forest, but I don’t believe every moment needs to be filled with words. Sometimes we stop and listen to the rain. Touch the moss. Breathe in the scent of the forest. Feel the river water with our bare feet. Or simply spend a quiet moment beneath an ancient tree. I believe that through these experiences — through all of our senses — nature can offer us something that knowledge alone cannot. Just as I found my own way back to nature, I hope my work as a guide can create a small opportunity for others to reconnect with it too. When you leave Yakushima, my hope is that you take home more than beautiful photos or memories of the places you visited. I hope you carry with you a meaningful experience and a small but lasting connection to this island and to nature. That is what matters most to me as a guide. Discover Yakushima from the water on a private kayaking journey along the beautiful Anbo River. Surrounded by lush evergreen broadleaf forests and mountains, we will paddle through calm, clear water at a relaxed pace. No previous kayaking experience is necessary, and I will teach you the basics before we begin. Rather than simply paddling from one point to another, we will take time to slow down and enjoy the river. Depending on the season and conditions, we may stop along the way, touch the clear water, relax by the riverbank, or even go for a swim. Yakushima receives abundant rain, and water is at the heart of the island’s ecosystem. Experiencing the river offers a different perspective on how the mountains, forests, water, and ocean are all connected. The pace will be adjusted to your experience, interests, and the conditions of the day.
The detailed itinerary may be adjusted according to the weather, river conditions, and your experience level. This is a sample itinerary: - Pick-up at your hotel or accommodation in Yakushima - Drive to the Anbo River - Prepare equipment and receive a safety briefing and basic paddling instruction - Start kayaking along the calm and clear Anbo River - Paddle through beautiful scenery surrounded by evergreen broadleaf forests and mountains - Take breaks along the way to relax and enjoy the river - Depending on the season and conditions, enjoy swimming or spending time by the water - Paddle back to our starting point - Change clothes and prepare for departure - Drive back to your accommodation No previous kayaking experience is necessary. The pace will be adjusted to the group and river conditions.
