I have lived in Japan since 1999 and I moved to the UNESCO World Heritage island of Yakushima in 2011. I began guiding on Yakushima in 2013. I have experience of high altitude treks (over 5, 000 metres) as well as expedition hikes in Europe and Asia. Yakushima has a number of great hikes through a wide variety of landscapes; from sub-tropical to sub-alpine. The island is a natural paradise, but it also has a historical and cultural story that sets it apart from mainland Japan. Visitors to Yakushima should consider at least 3 days upon the island as a recommended itinerary would include both an island tour and a forest tour as this would leave the visitor with a rich impression of Yakushima. Scenes from the Shiratani Unsuikyo area are often presented as the quintessential image of Yakushima. If you pick up a book about Yakushima and it's filled with moss-green forests, then the chances are you are looking at Shiratani Unsuikyo. Shiratani Unsuikyo is one of Yakushima's more accessible hiking areas and this factor allows us to offer thorough explanations of the ecology and history of this forest. There is too much to miss in this beautiful forest without a local eye. The full day Shiratani Unsuikyo hike usually goes through the 'genseirin' route and this route produces some of the best scenery on this hike. There are also some big trees along this route including Nidai sugi, Bugyo sugi and Sanbonashi sugi (3 legged sugi) The genseirin route also has probably the best moss area within the Shiratani Unsuikyo forest. For those that have the energy on a sunny day then an alternative route to climb to Taiko Iwa, a promontory overlooking the central mountains and the island's interior, can be viewed.
The itinerary is based upon how long the guest wishes to hike in the forest as there are numerous options. Below is an 6 hour hiking option. Pick up depends upon the location of your hotel. • 09:30 Enter the Shiratani Unsuikyo area. Walk the 'genseirin' forest route. • 12:00 Lunch (provided) Walk the 'genseirin' forest route. • 16:00 Exit Shiratani Unsuikyo
