I have lived in Japan since 1999 and I moved to the UNESCO World Heritage island of Yakushima in 2011. I began guiding on Yakushima in 2013. I have experience of high altitude treks (over 5, 000 metres) as well as expedition hikes in Europe and Asia. Yakushima has a number of great hikes through a wide variety of landscapes; from sub-tropical to sub-alpine. The island is a natural paradise, but it also has a historical and cultural story that sets it apart from mainland Japan. Visitors to Yakushima should consider at least 3 days upon the island as a recommended itinerary would include both an island tour and a forest tour as this would leave the visitor with a rich impression of Yakushima. While Jomon sugi may be the tree that eveyone wants to see, there are other cryptomeria trees that may not be as old, but are just as impressive and you can usually be alone with them as you sit and have lunch under its canopy. Yamato sugi is one such tree. Anyone wishing to experience the 'real' Yakushima forest should consider booking this tour. The hike begins from Yakusugi Land and it offers us a flavour of things to come as we pass by Buddha sugi (@1800 years old). Within 30 minutes we leave the established Yakusugi Land trail and enter the 'real' forest walking along the less established Ishizuka Trail. This trail is rarely walked by trekkers and so we are usually alone most of the time. There are some wonderful trees along this route and one tree that will particularly surprise you! After a 2 hour walk we arrive at Yamato sugi - just in the UNESCO boundary area. Yamato sugi (@3500 years old) sits in a quiet valley and taking lunch here is recommended.
The itinerary is based upon how long the guest wishes to hike in the forest as there are numerous options. Below is an 7 hour hiking option. Pick up depends upon the location of your hotel. • 08:30 Enter the Yakusugi Land area. Walk the Ishizuka Trail to Yamato sugi. • 12:00 Lunch (provided) Walk back to Yakusugi Land forest and complete the circuit route. • 17:00 Exit Yakusugi Land
