Hello! My name is Josh, and I’m a Californian living in Itoshima, Japan. I’ve lived in Asia since 2007, including twelve years in Shanghai, China, and more recently, in Japan. My main job is photography of all kinds: school photos in Asia, the Middle East, and the U.S., lifestyle and travel photos all over Kyushu, Japan, surprise proposal and family shoots in Fukuoka, and occasional events. When I’m not shooting, I work as a tour guide, both as a private guide around Kyushu and assisting large groups of travelers on chartered buses. I mainly work with kids and young adults, but older travelers have also used my services. I absolutely love showing people around Japan. Introducing people to the gorgeous natural scenery, providing helpful tips on blending into Japanese society while they’re here, sharing a little history, and explaining the significance of each place we visit are all aspects I love about my job. Come explore Kyushu with me and perhaps I’ll bring my camera and take some amazing shots for you!

Discover this tranquil hidden gem in Kyushu. Nestled in a small valley among the hills of Saga Prefecture, this charming village is home to artisanal shops selling handcrafted ceramics and pottery. Stroll along the winding river that flows through town, photograph the ceramic-adorned bridges and unique art installations, and hike up the hillside to discover spectacular torii gates and beautiful shrines.
- Drive from Sasebo to Okawachiyama, a 45 minute drive through the hills and greenery of Nagasaki and Saga Prefectures. - Arrive at Okawachiyama Village parking lot and discover its charming riverside sights, including a beautiful porcelain-decorated bridge and traditional wooden water-powered mortars that are still in operation today! (30-45 minutes) - Walk uphill along the main road and peruse the ceramics shops selling art, plates, cups, decorative pieces, etc. - many at a discount. (30 - 45 minutes) - Hike up to Take Shrine and see a few torii gates nestled along the pathway surrounded by rich greenery or autumnal foliage in late November/early December. (30 - 45 minutes of moderate hiking on stairs and paved pathways) - Stop by a restaurant of your choice along the way or grab some food to go at a popular Japanese convenience store. - Head back to Sasebo by car (45 minutes driving)
