Explore Modena your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Modena tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Modena for every interest, including:

History tours: Trace the UNESCO trio with a guided walk through the Romanesque Modena Cathedral, climb the Ghirlandina Tower for roofline views, and stand on Piazza Grande while your guide unpacks medieval stories carved into the marble portals. Add a stop by the Palazzo Ducale’s grand frontage to hear about the Este dukes and the city’s military academy.

Food and Drink tours: Visit a family-run acetaia to taste Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena straight from the batteria of ageing barrels, then head to a caseificio at morning curd-cooking time to see how Parmigiano Reggiano is made. Round things out with gnocco fritto and tigelle piled with cured meats at the Mercato Albinelli and a Lambrusco tasting at a countryside cantina.

Art and Culture tours: Explore the Galleria Estense to see the Este collections of Renaissance paintings and sculpture, then step into the Casa Museo Luciano Pavarotti to browse stage costumes and hear stories from his Modenese years. When schedules allow, your guide can arrange a peek inside the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni for a behind-the-scenes look.

The historic centre is compact and easy to cover on foot, with local SETA buses connecting farther sites. For acetaie, wineries, or villages outside town, you can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide to include private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Modena inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Modena

Base yourself in Modena, then branch out on easy day trips to nearby cities and hill towns, and with your tour set to your pace you keep more time for tastings, piazzas, and quick stops that fit your interests.

- Bologna, for portico-lined streets, lively food markets, and medieval towers that frame the skyline; if you’re into architecture and street life, the historic centre rewards slow walks, and your tour can weave in market tastings and quiet corners between the main sights.

- Parma and the dairy countryside, where Parmigiano Reggiano wheels age in tall stacks and prosciutto hangs in curing rooms; food lovers get morning dairy visits and simple lunches, while the cathedral and octagonal baptistery add art and calm to the day.

- Maranello and Motor Valley, a short ride from Modena, with workshops, museums, and test roads that tell the story of Italian speed and design; if cars are your thing, your tour can link small makers with the big names and still leave time for a Lambrusco stop.

- Mantua, ringed by lakes and rich in Renaissance squares and palaces, ideal if you like painting, urban history, and compact old towns; stroll arcaded streets, visit frescoed rooms, and pause by the water before heading back to Modena.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Modena most travellers miss.
