We will have a tour of three cities in Central Java. They are visiting (1) the Great Mosque of Central Java in Semarang. The mosque complex covers 10 hectares (25 acres). Three central buildings are arranged in the shape of a U, with the domed mosque at the center; all towers have pitched, tiled roofs, while the main mosque has four minarets. The central top resembles the roof of a "joglo", the traditional Javanese house, and symbolizes the rising steps toward heaven or to gain God's blessing. The long buildings form a library and auditorium, respectively. The hall can hold up to 2, 000 people. Six giant umbrellas are hydraulically operated every Friday in front of the mosque. These giant umbrellas are modeled after the massive umbrellas in Medina's Prophet's Mosque. (2) the Great Mosque in Demak - known as the nine Islamic leaders mosque, and (3) The Holy Menara Kudus Mosque in Kudus. It preserves pre-Islamic architectural forms such as old Javanese.
