Hi, I am Sabine and welcome to my city! That's me, a tour guide who has been working mainly in Jena and Weimar for more than ten years now. It is the area where I grew up while always having a strong interest in history, English and French languages. However, due to several circumstances I studied civil engineering in the first place. My early wish became true after the reunification of Germany with a training to become a foreign languages correspondent combined with a few months working and living in Great Britain. Back in my hometown Jena I finally got the license to work as a tour guide. Since that time I have continuously discovered something new in the history of Jena, Weimar and Erfurt. Amongst my guests, there has been the Canadian ophthalmologist, who had worked for all his professional life with instruments made by the Jena founded Zeiss company. Also a traveler from the US who had followed the footsteps of Napoléon and his battles and wanted to see the battlefields of 1806, a journalist from Belgium who wrote about BAUHAUS architecture and a professor from Japan whose field of research was Classicism and Romanticism. He wanted to see the places where those two epochs once started - to mention some of them. With each of those guests I became a little bit prouder to do this beautiful job in this particular area. At other historical places, you will understand why Jena was called "the global capital of philosophy" around 1800 with the philosophers Fichte, Hegel and Schelling lecturing there. See the venues where the polymath J. W. von Goethe and his best friend the philosopher and poet Friedrich von Schiller interchanged their genius thoughts. You will see: - Germany's first "skyscraper" (from 1915) - Henry van de Velde's "Ernst-Abbe-Memorial" (with Max Klinger's Herm) - the garden of Schiller's Garden Cottage (depending on the opening hours) - the old monastery from the 13th century (foundation of the university) - the market square (with one of the oldest town halls in Germany) - house of the philosopher Fichte from the outside (today Museum of Early Romanticism in Jena) - St. Michael's Church - town church (with the original gravestone of Martin Luther and the pulpit where he stood) - the main building of the university (with its beautiful courtyard) - the oldest still working planetarium with star projector in the world - Lady's quater (Art Nouveau buildings) - Frommannsches Anwesen (beautifully renovated convivial place from around 1800) - the medieval town fortification and the viewing area of the JenTower The end of the tour is your hotel or a place of your convenience.
