Dachau, the first German concentration camp, was the only camp that operated during the entire twelve-year period of the Nazi dictatorship. It served as a "model" for all camps and was called the "School of Terror. " The largest SS training center in the 3rd Reich was also located there. By the time the US liberators arrived on April 29, 1945, 206, 000 people from 34 different nations had been imprisoned and over 41, 000 murdered. This tour helps to illuminate the socio-economic climate of the 1930s that enabled this tragic chapter in Germany's history to emerge. The museum is located in the former maintenance building. You will see a prisoner block, punishment cells and the crematoriums. After the war, three churches, a synagogue and a nunnery were built on the site. Dachau became an International Memorial Site/Documentation Center in 1965.
