The Kurfürstendamm, literally the electors' log road, was originally a pathway used by the electors of Brandenburg to go from the Berlin Castle to their Grunewald Hunting Lodge. Chancellor Otto von Bismarck took the Champs-Elysées in Paris as a model and from 1875 transformed the path into a large avenue surrounded by prestigious houses. The development of the New West, later called City West, into a shopping, cultural and nightlife hub contributed to the prestige of the avenue. The intelligentsia met in the many famous cafés. During the Roaring Twenties, it was the place to have fun, not only in Germany but in Europe. After World War II, the Ku'damm, as it is called today, became the central boulevard of the new West-Berlin in the separated city. Since reunification, it is the home of luxury boutiques and magnificent apartment buildings. Let's take a leisurely stroll along the Ku'damm, learning about 150 years of history and its famous visitors, such as Buffalo Bill and Josefine Baker.
