Hi! I'm Romain and I was born and raised in La Rochelle. This city used to be called "A state within the state". Since my childhood, I've always been curious about old stones and ancient times, and more specifically about La Rochelle's extraordinary history. This brought me to get a local degree in art history and archeology. After seven years living abroad in Ireland, the Middle East and South America, I came back to my beloved town in 2013. I now work as a part-time French teacher in secondary schools and as a private tour guide. Thanks to my studies and my readings, I have an in-depth knowledge of La Rochelle and the past of the Charentes region. From the first Roman settlements, to the Protestant empowerment and its international trade golden age, and then the slow decline of the city power and independence after the great siege led by Cardinal de Richelieu. As a tour guide, my goal is to share with you my understanding and adapt my explanations to what is important to you. So, tell me wether you're more interested in general history or in the little stories that the great one is made of, or both. Whatever you decide, I'll illustrate my comments by showing you La Rochelle's architectural distinctive features. It will be an honor to guide you through La Rochelle center and the historical and natural beauties that surround the city. Don't hesitate to contact me and share your expectations with me! Most of the tours I offer can be adapted to suit your desires. I can't wait to meet you and show you around La Rochelle! - 2004 local degree in Art History and Archeology - 2006 Modern Literature degree - 2013 tour guide in Bordeaux, now restarting in La Rochelle I am not a driver guide but I can arrange transportation upon request. I am not licensed to guide inside museums due to local regulations.

La Rochelle is one of the oldest French harbour on the Altlantic Coast. The city is famed for its archway streets, its old harbour and its medieval towers, and also dozens of renaissance and neoclassical private mansions. The old city is packed with evidences of its past grandeur. The canon shaped gargoyles are evidences of its independence, the Huron faces sculpted on the facades recall the powerful trade link that once existed between North America and the city. It will be my pleasure to show you around and introduce you to La Rochelle history and legacy using digital resources (video, pictures, paintings). We will also talk about that strong link that connect France and Canada through La Rochelle harbour, and mention some of the reasons that made La Rochelle the last stop for many French departing to the new world like the king's daughters.
We will see La Rochelle's highlights such as : - the old harbour and its towers - the town hall - the historical city center and the most interesting ship owners' private mansions - the Providence Convent, last home of many king's daughters - the archways street (not all of them because their total length is about 3km) - the cathedral - and of course the Atantic Ocean
