On the Western Front 1st and 2nd ANZAC constituted a fraction of the BEF that was 50 divisions strong. 1st, 2nd and 4th Australian Divisions attacked on the Somme at Pozières and Mouquet Farm between 23 July and 8 September 1916. Tanks made their debut When the New Zealand Division attacked on the Somme. When the Germans withdrew to the Hindenburg Line in February 1917, the Australians followed skilfully. Trench warfare returned with the attacks at Bullecourt. The Australian Corps was formed on 1 November 1917, grouping the Australian divisions in a single formation. Their crowning achievement was the recapture of Villers-Bretonneux in a difficult night attack. Along with the Canadians, the Australian Corps spearheaded the BEF's advance to victory.
