Grožnjan, Motovun and truffle hunting Istria with lunch

This is medieval Istria with a truffle twist! Looking like a mid-sized, wrinkled and unattractive potato, you would never tell that this mushroom hides so much fragrance and taste. Istria has both black (summer and winter) and white (winter) truffles making it possible to have fresh truffles all year long. As a last resort in times of famine in bygone times, truffles are one of the main delicacies of northern Istria today. Grated as Parmiggiano cheese on top of local dishes, such as risotto, home-made pasta or steak, they definitely are an acquired taste. Today, I would like to share my experience and take you on a hunt with real truffle dogs through the forests near the town of Buzet. The truffles are not hidden for you to find them: it takes some effort. You will see how dogs react, how their human reacts, where these unusual mushrooms grow as well as what they look like when they have just been taken out from the soil. Bon appétit!
