Dear friends, I’m Michael Chang—your English-speaking guide in Xi’an, and a storyteller at heart. For over a decade, I’ve been walking this ancient land with travelers from all over the world, and before settling here, I worked as a national guide, crisscrossing China with tour groups. That journey taught me one thing clearly: every traveler is different, but what everyone truly wants is to feel the soul of a place, not just see its sights. Now, I call Xi’an my full-time home base, and honestly? After all those years on the road, this city still steals my heart every single day. I know what many first‑timers imagine—a small, sleepy town, perhaps just the home of the Terracotta Warriors. But Xi’an is anything but small. Today, it’s one of China’s newest national central cities, a vibrant, modern metropolis that still wears its ancient glory with pride. This is where the Silk Road began. This is one of the “Four Great Ancient Capitals of the World,” standing alongside Rome, Athens, and Constantinople. For over 1,100 years, thirteen dynasties made this their throne room. The Tang Dynasty’s golden days may have faded, but they left behind treasures that still breathe: the most complete city wall in China, the melodic Bell and Drum Towers, the serene Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the astonishing Great Mosque—a quiet testament to centuries of cultural fusion. As we Chinese like to say: “Visit Xi’an to touch 3,000 years of China, Beijing for 600, and Shanghai for 100.” That tells you why Xi’an isn’t just a stop—it’s a pilgrimage. And me? I do it all. Private car tours with professional drivers (I’m not a driver myself, but I’ll arrange the best wheels for your group), early‑morning food hunts by foot or metro, lazy evening strolls through night markets, or deep‑dive walking tours that reveal hidden alleyways most tourists miss. My goal is never to just “show you around”—it’s to make you feel like a local for a day (or two). I’ll take you to the noodle shop where the chef still pulls dough by hand, or the tea stall where the owner remembers every regular’s name. Those are the moments I live for. I’m a fully licensed guide with the Shaanxi Tourism Association—proud of my credentials, but prouder still of the friendships I’ve made along the way. So if you’re ready to wander, eat, laugh, and fall in love with this ancient‑modern mosaic of a city, come find me. Let’s walk its streets together, and I promise you’ll leave with more than photos—you’ll leave with stories. Welcome to Xi’an. I can’t wait to meet you. — Michael

Michael is an amazing guide. He brought good vibes and a vast knowledge, not only of the local food, but also of Chinese history and many other things. We had a lot of fun and returned home with a very full and happy belly. The food was extremely delicious and Michael really knows his spots. It's also very helpful to have someone to tell you how to eat certain dishes because it's not always clear. We highly recommend the tour, it was the highlight of our stay.

Michael was a great guid for the evening food tour and knew some amazing local restaurants to try Xian snacks. He was able to talk about each item and how they are made and gave me enough knowledge to be able to go out in my remaining evenings in Xian to try new things. Thank you!

Michael is a wonderful and flexible guide and his food tour of Xi'an was incredible! Xi'an food is very unique, being a product of the mixing of cultures along the Silk Road, and he took our family (including two children) to local eateries we never would have found on our own to sample an array of this food. We loved all of it, especially the Xi'an pork 'hamburger,' the local hand-pulled noodles, the beef soup dumplings with a strong cumin flavor, and fresh pomegranate juice. Highly recommend!

Michael is an excellent guide. He is friendly, kind, and speaks fluent English. He went above and beyond to insure that our food tour in Xian was perfect. He is knowledgeable regarding the local cuisine and takes you to canteens and tiny out of the way restaurants that a traveler would never find on their own. We had so much fun while on our night food tour… from eating the local fare, zooming around in a Tuk Tuk and enjoying the company of Michael. Thank you Michael!

We had a fabulous evening with Michael! He's fun, he's funny, he's knowledgeable, and he knows the best places to eat good, authentic local food. He took us to places we would never have found on our own and where we were the only tourists around. We highly recommend Michael. We had one of the most entertaining evenings we've had since we arrived in China 10 days ago!!

Your Xian tour itinerary

Meet your guide in the Hilton hotel. Walk to one of the two most popular food districts of Xi'an. It is an ancient style building complex with a large collection of the most famous local snacks from all over the province! Here we will taste the savory Chinese hamburger - round pita bread stuffed with minced pork, and then visit the only food museum in the same area within the wall. After a short stroll through a park we will take a quick bus ride to the Muslim quarter, the other food marketplace in a community with a 1300 year history. It's not only a place of historic interest but the most colorful and bustling area, a real kaleidoscope of local life! The rest of our tour will mainly take place in this humble but richly cultural district! These 5-6 eateries are scattered around the district, some on main streets and others tucked away in back streets, but they all cook for the locals.
