Step back into distant history in 15 million-year-old cave featuring lauded prehistoric wall paintings
Overview of your Vidin tour
The 15-million-year-old Magura Cave is a famous archaeological and paleontological site. Inside it, researchers have found bones from cave bears, cave hyenas, foxes, wolves, wild cats, otters, and other prehistoric animals. In 1984, the Magura Lake was put on UNESCO's Tentative List for consideration as a World Heritage Site. According to a local legend, a powerful dragon lived in the cave and captured people from a nearby settlement. Do not be afraid, this is a common folklore theme in our fairy tales! Somehow, that is my favorite magic space where the time machine brings me back to my roots when looking to the oldest European prehistoric calendar so precisely painted on the wall. As the cave is a dwelling place for 2000 bats, a man could feel as a star in a thriller movie but be so safe and excited at the same time:) In August the Bulgarian national opera often holds a performance here. Walking from one entrance to the other and listening to the excerpts from Wagner's "Ring Cycle" in Magura Cave. Great!
