Visiting DC, especially if you're a first-time visitor, it's likely that DC's world-famous monuments and memorials will be at the top of your must-see list. The United States is often called a cultural melting pot, and the architecture of its capital city, Washington, D. C. , is truly an international blend. Famous buildings in the District incorporate influences from ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, medieval Europe, and 19th-century France. the museums informs people of all ages about the power of architecture and its influence on our lives. For me as a tour guide and architect by education, the cultural relevance of the historical buildings, museums and monuments of the capital is a very important aspect, and especially why conducting this particular tour. The tour will cover most of DC's major sights in four hours on this private tour of the city, and can be conducted in one of the following languages: English - Russian - Hebrew.
During the tour, we'll try to cover the following highlights: * The White House and its nearby Lafayette Square, that was once named "President's Park". This square and the historic buildings surrounding it became National Historic Landmarks in 1970. In its past, Lafayette Park had many uses including serving as a racetrack, a graveyard, a zoo, a slave market, an encampment for soldiers during the War of 1812, and many political protests and celebrations. Most who visit are immediately drawn to the various large statues in the park. * U. S. Capitol, a grand symbol of the United States Government, with its striking white dome acts as a focal point to the building, and is being recognized across the world as one of USA most prominent icons of Democracy. * The National Mall and the overview of its Smithsonian Institution free museums * Washington Monument * FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) Memorial * MLK (Martin Luther King) Memorial * Jefferson Memorial * World War II Memorial * Lincoln Memorial
