The tours I give always have a level of enthusiasm that is beyond scripted - because I live here and know that each day brings changes that will interest me and let me excite the tourist. I know the landmarks, but I know the locals, and I can make a tour of an "ordinary" neighborhood exciting because I also know the history of New York. I know why this is the Empire City, and can convey the excitement of discovery on virtually every corner. I have learned to love this city perhaps as one learns to love a beautiful yet willful woman. For me to make a real and true connection with it, I had to become better acquainted with New York through an elaborate series of "dates" with its neighborhoods and their histories. I felt the city telling me to learn more about it first; I had to prove that I cared. Every neighborhood, just as every business in them, is like a library of melodramas and romances written by its denizens, past and present, all informed by a history that is growing every day from the hands, hearts and minds of those people. By running and walking, and making contacts with people in these neighborhoods and businesses, I have fully embraced my lover's assignment. In fact, after entering all these neighborhoods and businesses I felt compelled to "check out" and read their literature. I have became a licensed tour guide. I taught students how to pass the city's tour guide exam at City College. I lead groups, both large and small, that include high school students, businessmen and other adults, as well as retirees, both from the U.S. as well as abroad. I love taking people around my city. Licensed New York City and Washington, DC Tour Guide; B.A., M.A., English; urban historian. My NYC license No. is 0975275; D.C. is TGL11706

Do you want to see the revolutionary who plotted the overthrow of 5000 years of a dynasty right here in Chinatown? Who's revered by the community and many others all over the world? It is a statue, of course - but it is something to see; just as it is to realize that Chinatown and Little Italy are much more than just chop sticks and red sauce. I knew about Chinatown when my son went to HIgh School, but I really learned more about all that Chinatown can really be with the help of my son - whose classmates were Chinese and lived here. A true neighborhood, with more than meets the eye or the palate. And it virtually surrounds Little Italy on Mulberry Street! Of course, we can shop along Canal Street, and have ice cream at the ice cream factory - but there's a feeling to the neighborhood that I can't summarize:
*Beginning our tour at Canal Street and Broadway, we shall walk up Broadway to Howard Street, and walk east to Centre Street. *We may drop in to the Museum of the Chinese in America (MOCA) and walk up to Grand Street and the old Police Headquarters. *We will walk up Grand (or Broome - we shall see!) and across Mulberry - and pay a visit to Little Italy - and to Mott Street and the intense beginning of Chinatown. *Turning right onto Mott, we shall walk past the many open-air markets for fish and vegetables - some of which may be entirely new to you. Once reaching Canal Street we will turn and cross Canal at Elizabeth Street. *We will have opportunities to taste some dumplings - and ice cream - by the time we arrive at Columbus Park and the great community of Chinese who congregate there in good weather. The ending of our tour may depend on what interests in you have been excited by our walk - maybe you'd like to visit one restaurant we passed for dinner?!
