Explore Newcastle your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Newcastle tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Newcastle for every interest, including:

History tours: Climb the keep at Newcastle Castle, stroll Grey Street in Grainger Town, and learn bridge lore at the Tyne and Swing bridges. Add Segedunum at Wallsend to stand at the end of Hadrian’s Wall.

Layover tours: Pickup at the airport or Central Station, then a quick loop of the Quayside, the BALTIC viewing deck, and the Ouseburn Valley before your return. Your guide can manage timing and store luggage so you travel light.

Food and Drink tours: Taste local bites in Grainger Market, from stotties with pease pudding to artisan cheese, then sample pints at Ouseburn microbreweries or Wylam Brewery in Exhibition Park. You can also arrange a reservation at House of Tides or enjoy fish and chips by the river.

The core is compact and easy to walk, and the Tyne and Wear Metro connects the centre, coast, and airport. For Hadrian’s Wall or spread-out tastings, ask about chauffeured tours or private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Newcastle inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Newcastle

Use Newcastle as your base for easy day trips to historic cities, Roman ruins, and the North Sea coast, and shape these as private tours that match what you like to see and do.

Durham: A quick ride brings you to the cathedral and castle above the River Wear, where you can dive into centuries of history, stroll the riverside path, and pause in small cafés; if you like architecture, quiet lanes, or university city energy, this compact place fits well into a relaxed day.

Hadrian’s Wall with Corbridge and Hexham: Walk short stretches of the Wall and step into Roman life at sites like Chesters or Housesteads, then add a wander in Hexham Abbey or Corbridge’s stone streets; this suits you if you enjoy light hiking, big views, and clear stories from Britain’s Roman frontier.

Tynemouth and the coast: Head out to beaches and cliff tops, explore Tynemouth Priory’s headland setting, and check the Fish Quay for simple, fresh meals; if sea air, coastal photos, and easy walking sound good, this coast delivers without a long drive.

Alnwick and Alnmouth: Mix a market town visit with time at the castle and gardens, then reach the nearby sands at Alnmouth for open views and a calm stroll; book lovers can add Barter Books in the old railway station to make the day feel even more personal.

Holy Island of Lindisfarne: Time your crossing with the tides to find abbey ruins, a small castle, and wildlife-rich shores; this works best if you like early Christian sites, birdwatching, and a slower pace in a tiny village setting.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Newcastle most travellers miss.
