Explore Durham your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Durham tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Durham for every interest, including:

Layover tours: Meet at Durham station or Newcastle Airport and fit in a 2 to 4 hour visit that covers the cathedral's nave and cloister, river views from Prebends Bridge, and a tea stop on the Peninsula. Your guide manages timing and returns you to your platform or terminal on schedule.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Follow the River Wear loop to look for herons and kingfishers, or head to the Durham Heritage Coast at Seaham for sea-glass beachcombing and cliff views. With more time, drive into the Durham Dales for a walk to High Force waterfall.

History tours: Explore Binchester Roman Fort to see bathhouse remains and altars, then continue to Auckland Castle and its galleries for stories of the Prince Bishops. If you want living history, add the Beamish museum for trams, pit village displays, and period shops.

The historic centre is compact and walkable, and regional buses and trains are handy. For the coast and dales, ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Durham inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Durham

If you want a change of pace without going far, use Durham as your base and branch out to nearby cities, coasts, and countryside on easy day trips that match your interests.

Newcastle upon Tyne: Ride 15 minutes by train for a lively riverfront, striking bridges, and the creative Ouseburn area where street art, small galleries, and indie breweries sit close together, and your tour can lean toward architecture, food, or modern culture without losing time in transit.

York: A classic day trip for history fans, with walkable medieval walls, narrow lanes like the Shambles, and strong Roman and Viking stories, and if you like food, your guide can fold in chocolate stops and a market stroll so you balance big sights with simple local flavour.

Northumberland Coast: Wide beaches at Bamburgh, views of sea-worn castles, and calm villages give you space to slow down, and your tour can plan around Lindisfarne’s tide times for a safe crossing, add short coastal walks, or focus on photography and fish and chips by the harbour.

Hadrian’s Wall Country: Low hills, open views, and stretches of Roman wall make a solid mix of light hiking and hands-on history, and you can choose an easy section with small milecastles or go deeper into archaeology with your guide adjusting pace and sites to fit your energy.

North Pennines and High Force: Rolling moorland, stone-built villages, and a short path to one of England’s most impressive waterfalls make a relaxed nature day trip, and your tour can add a riverside walk, a café stop in Middleton-in-Teesdale, or viewpoint stops for simple landscape photos.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Durham most travellers miss.
