The unassuming village of Grantchester, just 2 miles south of Cambridge City centre, has much to reveal. . How and why did this village become such a magnet to Cambridge academics from the late 19th century, coming to play a key role in the life of fellows and students ? Find out how a tradition was born at the Orchard Tea rooms, God's little Acre, 120 years ago and who were among the group of Cambridge luminaries who met there. See stills of Grantchester locations of the hit tv series based on the Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie, following a circuit round the village and riverside. Discover little known facts about the actors and the inside knowledge of filming the series in the village and Cambridge. This has given the village an international profile today, drawing visitors from home and abroad, bringing the village alive. For TV fans, not to be missed ! View the homes of famous residents who lived there and a sculpture garden of the former celebrity Politician, whose story is renowned.
Grantchester village is easily reached on foot, along the Grind from the south of Cambridge ( Newnham) -a pleasant stroll along the river Cam on a warm day. You can cycle or punt whilst enjoying tranquil vistas of the Meadows. Or, It is just 5- 10 minutes by car. Buses go out from Drummer Street bus station every day except Sundays. A rather unique tour that gets you out of the city within minutes, an opportunity to relax in the shadow of the historic city, visible from the river banks. It is worth the trip out and offers a relaxing and illuminating contrast to Cambridge. We follow a circuit starting at the Gin Distillery on the main high street and taking in all the sights, including the church ( much used in filming the tv series), and riverside Meadows, the local pubs too and the famous Orchard Tea rooms, where refreshment can be had after the tour.
